PREPARATION
Print out sufficient copies of the day cards and base boards for each pupil/student to have a set.
ACTIVITIES
Collect a set - this is a simple activity if you are working with a small group - the aim is for each learner to collect a whole week i.e. seven day cards.
Use the day cards - you hold all the day cards - shuffle the cards.
Take one of the cards and read the day to the first learner, s/he takes it.
Read the second card and the second learner takes it, etc.
When all of the learners have got one day, continue to read the cards. Ask the learner `Do you want XXXday?'
If a learner has NOT got that day s/he must say `Yes please'.
If a learner has already got that day s/he must say `No thank you'.
If a learner has already got that day and then says `Yes please' take away the day card s/he has already collected.
The first learner to collect all six cards is the winner.
Collect a set 2 - this activity is the same as (1) but each learner has a base board to put the day cards on and when you ask the questions instead of saying `Do you want Wednesday/etc.?' say `Do you want the day before Thursday?' `Do you want the day after Tuesday?' etc. As the learners are placing the days on the base board, use language like, `Yes that's right, Wednesday comes before Thursday.'
Rummy - if you are working with a whole class, this is an appropriate activity. Learners work in small groups (three or four in a group). Each learner has a base board; the day cards are shuffled and placed in the middle of the group. Learners take it in turns to take a card and read it out - they then place it on their base board in the correct place. If they already have the card, they put it to the bottom of the pile. First person to fill the base board is the winner.
NOTE - the `collect a set' activities can be used with larger numbers of learners if they are put in groups of three to five and more confident learners take your place.
