Vocabulary

Numbers one to ten

These materials can be used in a variety of ways here are a few ideas:

ACTIVITY 1 - ROUND THE TRACK

ACTIVITY 2 - CHAIN DRILL

Work with a group of two to six pupils/students.

This is a helpful little activity to introduce new words, but it should only be used for a short time - three or four minutes at the most.

ACTIVITY 3 - MATCHING

Give a group of two/three pupils/students two of the sets of cards and ask them to match them. Later give them all three sets.

ACTIVITY 4 - VISIBLE PAIRS (a game for two to four players)

  1. Spread out the picture cards, number cards and word cards face down on the table (NB for younger children use two sets of the picture cards).

  2. Players take it in turn to turn over one of the cards leaving them face up.

  3. If the player who has just turned over a card can see a set of three cards s/he must say the number and can then take those three cards.

  4. The player with the most cards at the end is the winner.

ACTIVITY 5 - MULTIGAME

For this you need a track, dice, counters and a set of cards (there is a track at the end of this document).

Players take a card and, if they can

they can throw the dice and move round the track. First player to complete the track is the winner. To make the game longer, ask players to go round the track two or three times.

In order to increase oral participation it is sometimes useful if players play in teams of two or three instead of individually and therefore have to discuss their responses to the cards they pick up. Often children help each other; this usually promotes learning and social skills; we do not need to insist on strict adherence to rules.

NB - A very useful variation of this activity:

Each learner asks the next person the question `What is this number?', rather than answering it themselves - this ensures that all children use the target language.
