In1939,beforetheSecondWorldWarstarted,BritainhadaConservativegovernment.TheleaderwasNevilleChamberlain.¹ HewasreplacedbyWinstonChurchill.Churchillledacoalitiongovernment.Politiciansfromallpartiesworkedtogether.Theyforgottheirdifferencesforthesakeofthecountry.

Despitethewar,manypeople’slivesimproved.² Theunemploymentofthe1930’swasforgottenaspeopleeitherjoinedthearmedforcesorworkedinfactoriesorotheressentialindustries.Thegovernmentalsodecidedthatcompleteequalitywouldmakethepopulationfeelmoreasiftheywereallworkingtogetherforacommoncause.Earlyinthewar,foodwasrationed.³ Thewell-offcouldn’tusetheirwealthtobuymore.Manypoorpeopleactuallyatebetterthantheyhadbeforethewar.

WhenthewarinEuropefinished,Churchilldecidedtocallanelection.Atthetime,hewasoneofthemostpopularleadersinBritishhistory.⁴ TheConservativesweresurethatthispopularitywouldguaranteethemvictory.However,itwasn’tenough.Peoplelovedhimbutdislikedhisparty.Theyalsolookedtohimasapersontoturntoinanemergency.Nowthattheemergencyhadpassed,hewasnolongerneeded.Inaddition,someofthemostpopularpoliticiansinthewartimegovernmenthadbeenfromtheLabourparty.⁵ TheypromisedtocompletelychangeBritishsociety.Nowthatpeoplehadtastedequality,theywantedtokeepit.So,aLabourgovernmentwaselected.ItbroughtinafreeNationalHealthService,welfarebenefits,freeeducationanditnationalizedsomeofBritain’skeyindustries.

Thefeelingofoptimismdidn’tlast.In1951,theConservativeswonagainandChurchillreturnedtoNumber10DowningStreet.
