Therehavebeenmanyamazingelectionsinhistory.BarackObamabecamethefirstAfrican-AmericanpresidentoftheUSAin2008.In1979,MargaretThatcherbecameBritain’sfirstfemalePrimeMinisterand,in1990,LechWałe¸sabecamePoland’spresident.However,the1945electioninBritainmuststillbeoneofthemostsurprising.
In1939,beforetheSecondWorldWarstarted,BritainhadaConservativegovernment.TheleaderwasNevilleChamberlain.1 HewasreplacedbyWinstonChurchill.Churchillledacoalitiongovernment.Politiciansfromallpartiesworkedtogether.Theyforgottheirdifferencesforthesakeofthecountry.
Despitethewar,manypeople’slivesimproved.2 Theunemploymentofthe1930’swasforgottenaspeopleeitherjoinedthearmedforcesorworkedinfactoriesorotheressentialindustries.Thegovernmentalsodecidedthatcompleteequalitywouldmakethepopulationfeelmoreasiftheywereallworkingtogetherforacommoncause.Earlyinthewar,foodwasrationed.3 Thewell-offcouldn’tusetheirwealthtobuymore.Manypoorpeopleactuallyatebetterthantheyhadbeforethewar.
WhenthewarinEuropefinished,Churchilldecidedtocallanelection.Atthetime,hewasoneofthemostpopularleadersinBritishhistory.4 TheConservativesweresurethatthispopularitywouldguaranteethemvictory.However,itwasn’tenough.Peoplelovedhimbutdislikedhisparty.Theyalsolookedtohimasapersontoturntoinanemergency.Nowthattheemergencyhadpassed,hewasnolongerneeded.Inaddition,someofthemostpopularpoliticiansinthewartimegovernmenthadbeenfromtheLabourparty.5 TheypromisedtocompletelychangeBritishsociety.Nowthatpeoplehadtastedequality,theywantedtokeepit.So,aLabourgovernmentwaselected.ItbroughtinafreeNationalHealthService,welfarebenefits,freeeducationanditnationalizedsomeofBritain’skeyindustries.
Thefeelingofoptimismdidn’tlast.In1951,theConservativeswonagainandChurchillreturnedtoNumber10DowningStreet.
