Unfortunately,greedpreventedthelampsfromsavingasmanylivesastheycould.4 Itwasnowpossibletospendlessonfansastherewerefewerexplosions.Thismeantthattheairtheminerswerebreathingwasactuallylesshealthythanithadbeenbefore.Thelampswerealsoeasilydamagedwhichmeantthat,withthepoorventilation,explosionswerealmostasfrequentastheyhadbeen.Anotherproblemwasthatthelampsweren’tasbrightasbarecandles.5
Despiteitsfaults,theDavyLamp,alongwithothersimilarlampswhichappearedatthesametime,didhelptoreduceminingaccidentsalthoughtheystayedatveryhighlevelsuntilelectriclampsstartedtoappearinthelatenineteenthcentury.
