Unfortunately,greedpreventedthelampsfromsavingasmanylivesastheycould.⁴ Itwasnowpossibletospendlessonfansastherewerefewerexplosions.Thismeantthattheairtheminerswerebreathingwasactuallylesshealthythanithadbeenbefore.Thelampswerealsoeasilydamagedwhichmeantthat,withthepoorventilation,explosionswerealmostasfrequentastheyhadbeen.Anotherproblemwasthatthelampsweren’tasbrightasbarecandles.⁵

Despiteitsfaults,theDavyLamp,alongwithothersimilarlampswhichappearedatthesametime,didhelptoreduceminingaccidentsalthoughtheystayedatveryhighlevelsuntilelectriclampsstartedtoappearinthelatenineteenthcentury.
