Overall aims: Students will improve their knowledge of past simple and past continuous tenses through different grammar and vocabulary exercises.

Assumed knowledge: Students have already got some knowledge of past simple and continuous rules.

The T starts the lesson with a funny story that happened sometime in the past. T asks also SS to talk about their accidents or situations they have seen on TV. After a while the T asks some Ss to present their story.

SS may talk in mother tongue more than in English. T should walk around the class and tell SS to speak English.

Presentation

T asks students to look at the pictures in exercise 1 on page56 and match them with the sentences given bellow. The Ss’ task is to put those sentences in correct grammar structure. The T asks some Ss to give their answers.

To make sure that SS understand the past simple and continuous tenses well and introduce some vocabulary connected with accidents.

SS may have problems with using the right structure. T should check the exercise and correct the mistakes

Presentation

T introduces some of the vocabulary from the reading passage. Then the T asks Ss what the text can be about. After that the T asks Ss to put the words under the reading passage into the gaps in the text. Then the T checks the exercise with a whole class

To make the reading passage more understandable. To practise reading skill and past tenses.

SS may know some of the word given by the T but also there can be some which are still unknown. The T should ask if there is anything else they do not understand.

Practice

Before the task the T give few example sentences with the use of “while” and “when” and tries to elicit from Ss what are the differences between those structures. Then the T gives Ss handouts with the use of “while” and “when”. Then Ss read their answers one by one.

To practise make sure that SS understand it clearly the difference between the use of “when” and “while”

SS may not clearly understand the rules of the structures. The T should also tell Ss to read the grammar reference about this subject.

Practice

T asks SS to do exercise 5 from page 57 and match the parts of sentences with “while” and “when”. Then the T asks Ss to read their answers one person by one.

To practise past continuous tenses and use of “while” and “when”.

SS may confuse one word with the other. T should check the exercise and the differences once more if needed.

Production

T divides the class into two groups of four or so and gives them board games to play. Ss’ task is to finish a started sentence as they move around the board

Ss may have problems with other Ss cheating. The T should give exact instructions before the task and make sure that the Ss obey the rules during playing it.
