Blackberry browser and email without a Blackberry contract.
In order to access the internet from your Blackberry and have your Yahoo,Gmail,AOL etc, email sent straight to your handset you will need the following.
Blackberry Desktop Manager installed on your pc or laptop. If you do not already have this program, please download and install it from:-
Your Blackberry with the sim card you want to use fitted in it.
A standard mini usb data cable to connect your Blackberry to your computer.
The new service book file on this disc to install in your blackberry.
On your Blackberry navigate to options/advanced options/service book.Once you are in the service book page hold down the “ALT” key and type ”SBEB”.A message will appear saying ”Legacy SB Restore-Enabled” .Click “OK”
Start Blackberry Desktop Manager on your computer and connect your handset.Once it is recognized select “backup and restore” then “advanced”.Next, at the top of the left hand box you will see an arrow marked “file” click it and select “open”.Navigate to your “browser via tcp” file, which is in the service book folder on this disc and double click it,it should now appear in the left hand box of Desktop Manager.Click the file to highlight it and then click the >> arrow to send it to your handset, clicking “yes” when asked.Once the transfer is complete you can close desktop Manager and disconnect your handset from your computer.
On your Blackberry navigate to options/advanced options/browser and make sure it is set to just “browser”. Eg.you may have 2 options such as “Vodafone Live” and “browser”,set it to “browser”.Save and exit.
On your Blackberry navigate to options/advanced options/TCP and input the APN,username and password for your network. The settings for most UK networks can be found at http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html Save your settings and exit.
Your Blackberry will now access the internet just like any other GSM phone. To test your browser you can select the option “go to”in your browser and type the address of a website. For ease of use I recommend Opera Mini browser as it is easier and faster to use and doesn’t have the default Blackberry home pages installed. You will find Opera Mini on this disc and can be installed on your Blackberry by using the application loader function of Blackberry desktop manager.
To have your web based email account sent directly to your Blackberry sign up at either http://my.funambol.com or http://en.shangmail.com and follow the instructions to install their application on your Blackberry. Both of these services are free. The Shangmail application is included on this disc and can be installed using application loader. To install Funambol you simply click a link in an sms that will be sent to your phone after signing up for a Funambol account and the software will download and install.
You now have a Blackberry with full internet access and push email without the need for a Blackberry contract.
Note: If you remove the battery and/or sim card from your phone you will need to repeat the service book install and reset your browser and TCP settings.
If you encounter any problems with this conversion please email jwoodsuk@gmail.com and I will be happy to help.
