Lekcja 2: How to read job ads
nadają, a w rezultacie - oszczędzić czas i nerwy.
This time you will have the opportunity to learn how to read and understand job advertisements written in English,
which will allow you to avoid misunderstandings as well as applying for posts that are not suitable for you, and as a
result - will save both your time and nerves.
How to read job ads.
Without further ado, let's examine two real life ads from a current job seeker services website.
Usually, first lines of an ad include the position you will be applying for (1). Sometimes its is pretty obvious and gives
you a clear-cut picture of what the job involves, say, "Babysitter needed for two hours a day". Other times, however,
they may be quite vague, for instance "Senior Marketing Manager". Then, you must read on carefully to understand the
scope of duties of a given job.
Then, also in the beginning, you can see the name of the company/institution offering the job (2). This lets you check it
up on the internet to find out more about its activity, character, and, which is also important - credibility.
Next, there comes the location of the job (3): it may be a specific city, or even a district within a city, but also an entire
country. Also, some jobs might be available internationally, especially if the exact location is not specified.
Every ad should also contain the information about the duration of a job: basically, either permanent or temporary (4).
Thus, if you are looking for a stable salary inflow, go for the first, but if you just want to earn a bit of money during the
summer - opt rather for the latter.
You will also have to make a decision whether you want to work full time and spend several hours at work every
single day (although you may be positively surprised, that the notion "full time" means about 35 hours per week in the
UK and in the US sometimes even 30 hours), or to choose the part-time option and get less tired, but in the same
time less pay (5).
Now, we can go to the main body of our ads. Most often, there is a mention of qualities that an employer would
welcome in an employee. So, the applicant in the first case should be dynamic, bubbly (enthusiastic) and self-
motivated, while in the other - driven (motivated).
A requirement that appears in most cases is work experience(6), so be prepared to present any documents
confirming that you indeed have it or to be able to prove your skills/knowledge in a particular field during the interview.
Other common requirements include holding a driving licence, having an academic degree or speaking a given
foreign language.
In case of the full time job, it is usually clarified which days and what hours you are going to work (6), while in the case
of a part-time job it's settled rather at a later stage.
Last but not least, there comes the issue of money! Some ads clearly state the amount of your potential or fixed salary
(7), while others inform you that this information is only provided to you after you apply for the job. If, having read
through all those, you still think you are fit for the job offered, apply! This last step can usually be done directly, if you
are using a web service, or by sending your
(and a cover letter if needed) to the address specified in the ad.
