1.  You are Personnel Managers in a big corporation. You need to hire two production 

engineers. Decide together what qualities a production engineer should have, what 
qualifications and what other requirements a proper candidate must have. .  

2.  Decide together which method of food preservation is best for different kinds of foods e.g. 

fruit and vegetables, meat, fish etc. Think about storage time. Discuss which method is better 
for long and short term preservation.  

3.  Your company is going to build a bridge over the big river. Think about important factors for 

bridge building. Decide what kind of bridge is best for big spans, think about materials you 
might use and other important things. 

4.  You are journalists working for a big newspaper. You are going to write an article about 

Millennium Bridge in London.  Decide what questions you would ask construction engineers 
about the construction details, specifications ( length, width, type, material used etc. (You 
don’t have to think about the answers) 

5.  You need to order plastic packaging for your products. Decide what kind of packaging would 

be most efficient for fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat and sausages or  electronic 
equipment .  

6.  You need to hire people to work on the oil rig. Decide what qualities are important for a 

roustabout  or a driller so that they work efficiently away from home for a long time.  

7.  You want to diversify supplies of energy for your company. Decide what are the possibilities 

and what kinds of energy you would use. What are the advantages and disadvantages of 
each energy type? 

8.  What do you think is the best alternative energy source in Polish geophysical conditions?  
9.  You work as air traffic controllers on one of the big airports. You are talking to a journalist 

about your job. Mention good and bad points of your job and qualities that an air traffic 
controller must have. 

10. You are going to buy an earth home. Think about positive and negative features of the earth 

home.

  century. Discuss how much it will differ from a contemporary 

home. Think about intelligent technologies.  

12. You want to go from London to the seaside at the south of France. How do you want to 

travel? Think about advantages and disadvantages of travelling by plane, train or car. Discuss 
with a partner prices, time, comfort and any other things. 

13. Persuade your partner who hates flying that this is the safest and the most comfortable way 

of travelling. Give arguments for and against.  

14. You want to live in an eco-city but your partner refuses. Try to convince your partner that life 

in an eco-city is possible and comfortable.  

15. You want to make a robot. Think about: what you would use it for, what features it should 

have, what shape or dimensions it should have. 

16. Do you think stealth technologies are necessary for defence policy? Discuss. Think about 

advantages and disadvantages.
