We were waiting to be rescued. It was getting dark and we didn’t know where we could spend the
night. How did it happen? When we left Cardiff the sea was calm and we were really enjoying the
sailing. Then the wind came up and there was no escape. Our boat crashed on the rocks. Our
mobiles went to the bottom of the sea. We just managed to save our sleeping bags and backpacks,
but they were all wet, and this small rocky island wasn’t very nice. When the boat crashed on the
rocks we decided to search the island for a warm, safe place but there wasn’t anywhere to hide and
wait till the morning. We were really tired and frightened. We tried to set up a campsite and light a
fire on the beach. Only John didn’t sit down to rest; he started climbing the rocks near the beach,

Dear Jane,

We have just come back from our weekend at the castle in Scotland. It was fantastic. We almost got
lost inside the castle, because there were so many rooms. The main hall was the size of our
classroom. Then somebody took us on a tour of the castle. First we saw the huge wide stairs, like
for the Queen! Then the kitchen and the dining room with a table for fifty people! The fireplace in
the dining room was so big that we could hide inside it. There was a library with thousands of
books and a living room with lots of armchairs and little coffee tables. We had our tea there and
went to the bedroom. Our bedroom was upstairs and had a view of the garden and a balcony. I
shared the bedroom with my sister Laura. In front of the warm fireplace we had a sofa with soft
cushions. The wardrobe had lots of shelves and two big mirrors. When we were getting ready for
dinner I scared my sister. Laura didn’t know I was in the wardrobe when she came in. She thought
that it was a ghost. When we were eating dinner somebody told us a story about the Ghost of the

Reporter: Hello and welcome to the radio programme MY WORK IS MY HOBBY. Professor Jack

Horner is our guest today. Thank you for coming in to the studio, Professor. Please tell our
listeners who you are and what you do.

Jack Horner

: I’m Jack Horner. I work at the Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University in

North America. I study dinosaurs. I try to find out when the dinosaurs lived, what they ate and
how old they were when they died.

Reporter: And what they looked like. In Jurassic Park you worked with Steven Spielberg. What

exactly did you do?

Jack Horner

: My job was to make sure that no big dinosaur mistakes were made. You see, children

who are interested in dinosaurs notice everything. I’ve been interested in dinosaurs ever since I
can remember.

Reporter: You certainly were a very good student.

Jack Horner

: In fact I wasn’t. At school I had trouble with maths, reading and foreign languages. I

couldn’t read words and numbers, and I had problems understanding instructions.

Reporter: So you didn’t do well at school? How did you become successful?

Jack Horner

: I wasn’t the best student but I was good at other things. And I have always believed in

myself. I always tell my students: “If you’re interested in doing something, spend time doing it.
But do it your way, don’t worry about what other people say.”

documentary about Johnny English at 10.30.

Jamie: Cool! Animal Friends – news – is on at 11.30. We can watch that, and then we have to let my

sister in. She watches the soap Neighbours at 12.00.

Sam: But look, Jamie. On Channel 1 they have the Mrs Foster’s Friends cartoon at 11.00 and then a

game show, Mrs Foster’s Fun Club, at 11.30.

Andy: Today on “Film Review” Jill is going to tell us about ...

Jill: “Bridge to Terabithia”. It’s a magical film about the friendship of a girl and a boy.

Andy: Tell us about them.

Jill: Leslie is a town girl, the only child of two writers who move to the country. Jess lives in a house

in the country with his mum, dad and four sisters. Both Leslie and Jess have great imaginations.
Leslie can tell stories and Jess can draw fantastic creatures.

Andy: How do they become friends?

Jill: Well, it all starts when Leslie, who has just come to the school, wins a race against Jess, the

fastest boy at the school. Then she meets May Belle, Jess’s younger sister. She gives May Belle
her Barbie dolls. When Jess finds out that Leslie is lonely, he gives her a little white puppy. Leslie
also wants him to be happy and on Jess’s birthday she gives him new paints.

Andy: Why do you say it’s a magical film?

Jill: Because it takes us to a magical country in the woods. When Jess and Leslie race across the fields

and jump over the river, they find an old tree house. They call this secret country Terabithia.
There they can run away from problems at school.

Andy: What problems do they have?

Jill: At school there’s a cool kids gang. Its leader, Janice Avery, is strong and hates everybody. When

Jess had to wear his older sister’s trainers they laughed at him. Then they took a cake away from
May Belle. Leslie tried to help her, but Janice frightened them. However, they find a way to win
with Janice.

Andy: What do they do?

Jill: You will have to see the film to find out.

Dear Sally,

I had a wonderful time with you on holiday. London is great, even in winter. You must visit me in
Paris. However, if I were you I would take the Channel Tunnel fast train, not a plane. I will tell you
why now. When I was coming back home after staying with you, my parents bought plane tickets
and we went to Heathrow, remember? It took ages to get to the Heathrow Express, because there
was so much traffic in the centre of London. Then at Heathrow we had to wait at the check-in desk.
When we finally got to the gate we were informed that the plane was late. After an hour of waiting
they said there was too much snow and that the next plane to Paris was from Gatwick airport. We
were taken there in a bus. It was another hour before we got on the plane. When we finally landed
in Paris our luggage was lost. We didn’t wait for the luggage, but went straight home. The luggage
was brought to us next morning. Although the plane is faster than the train, the journey is much
longer. And there is one more thing - on the train your luggage will travel with you and it will not
get lost! So when you come, I will wait for you at Paris Nord railway station. Please come in the

MOVING PICTURES

Thousands of years ago people were fascinated with moving pictures. Images of people and animals
were cut out of paper or metal and people used them to make shadows on the wall. When they
moved the images, the shadows moved. These were the first moving pictures. However, in the 19

century people started thinking about pictures which would move in a different way. An English
doctor, Peter Mark, noticed that if you watch many images of the same object, but in each image the
object is in a different position, the object seems to move. This discovery helped to create
equipment which could show moving images. They were not films yet, but separate pictures shown
with short breaks. Only later, around 1880, Louis and Auguste Lumière made a machine which
copied the pictures onto tape and could show the film on the screen. This was called a
cinematographic system from a Greek word cinematography. This means that movement is
recorded on the tape. It was December 28

, 1895 when the first cinema was opened in Paris. The

first short films were black and white, but the cinema was born. Now we can make our own colour
films with a little camera and watch them at home. However, going to the cinema is much more fun.
In French and English the word cinema is the same. In American English the name movies, for
films, or movie theater, for cinema, still show that films started from the moving image. Even the
museum of film is called the Museum of the Moving Image. If you want to know more about films,

Sandy: My grandma gave me her collection of old and new coins. They are from all over the world.

Sandy: Actually, you might be right. Come on, let’s check. Grandma, look. Is this coin Chinese?

Grandma: Yes. And it’s very old. Did you know that the Chinese invented paper money?

Sandy: Neither did I. Grandma, tell us about it.

Grandma: Well, in the 10th century, Chinese coins were very heavy. People kept them at shops and

the shop owners gave them special receipts, pieces of paper, for the money. The Chinese started

to use these receipts to pay instead of coins.

Sandy: Ok, so these receipts were like the money we have now? Simply paper money, not coins.

Grandma: Exactly. The Chinese started printing paper money in the 11th century. The largest

Chinese banknote ever printed was 28.8 x 33 cm. If you wanted to exchange that banknote for a
coin, it would have to weigh 3.5 kg. So you see, paper money was easier to carry.

Louisa: What was money made of in England?

Grandma: In the beginning people used shells, stones or other things. Then coins were made of silver

and gold. The first paper money, called banknotes, was introduced in 1661 by the Swedes. There
wasn’t enough silver or gold to produce coins. Now we also have plastic cards, as you know.

Sandy: How do you know so much about it?

Grandma: I used to work in a museum.

Guinness World Records

In 1951 the Managing Director of the Guinness Brewery, Sir Hugh Beaver, was hunting birds. He
and his friends could not agree which was the fastest bird in Europe. This made him think of
making a book which would list world records.

Sir Hugh found Norris and Ross McWhirter, who had a fact finding agency in London, and in
August 1955 they published the first Guinness Book of Records.

Every record is tested and checked

so that it is guaranteed to be true.

The Guinness Book of Records presents records like the tallest people or the heaviest fruit. The
tallest living woman, Sandy Allen from America, is 2.31 m, and the tallest man, Leonid Sandyk
from Ukraine, is 2.57 m. The heaviest fruits are a 1.85 kg apple from Japan, and a 5.27 kg lemon
from Israel.

There are also interesting records noticed when people did something, but not especially for the
Guinness Book of Records. The longest ever line of people holding hands, in Bangladesh, was not
formed because somebody wanted to set a record. In December 2004 over 5 million people joined
hands to protest against the government. However, some people created their records especially for
the Guinness Book of Records – like Tom Waes from Belgium who is the fastest at eating a large
pizza, in just less than 20 seconds!

The Guinness Book of Records has set a record of its own kind. With sales of more than 100
million copies in 100 different countries and 23 languages, it is the world’s best selling book ever!

Lottie’s holiday in the world of five senses

It was the most interesting summer trip I have ever had. We took a ferry from Copenhagen and
landed on a beautiful island, Bornholm. We were staying in a little house outside Ronne. We spent
the whole time at Erichsens Gård, a garden museum. Our days started with the smell of freshly
baked bread and sweet honey from Ronne. We ate in the kitchen around an old table. It was the first
time we tasted home-made cottage cheese. I learned how to make pancakes. It felt like living in the
past. We saw wool dyed with natural colouring for clothes. The wool was rough before, but soft
when it was coloured. In the evening dad chopped wood and I watered the plants and herbs in the
garden. The herbs smelled fantastic. We could also hear the garden, the birds singing and trees
moving in the wind, which was unusual for us. It was like music. We even tried painting pictures.
We learned that watercolour paints must be used carefully or the shapes and colours will mix in the
picture. Although we might not become artists, we will certainly use our hands to create things
more often. I have never taken so many photos. Now I can make posters of them and hang them
around my room. This was an experience we will never forget. The colourful sweater I made with
the wool from Erichsens Gård will always remind me of that place.

Adam: Well, we work for the CBBC Newsround programme. I was born in 1980, I have one sister

Sally. I love the cinema and eating out.

Ellie: I’ve been a reporter since 2003. I also have one sister and I love the cinema.

Shannon: You must have crazy ideas for your perfect Sunday afternoon?

Adam: You’re wrong. If I could, I would lie in bed till noon, have a lazy lunch and then try to go out

for some exercise. But I might end up reading a newspaper instead.

Ellie: I would have lunch at home and watch a video with my sister.

Shannon: What was your most embarrassing moment at work?

Ellie: Something I want to forget!

Adam: It was when I told Toby McGuire that he played Superman very well, and he actually played

Spiderman!

Shannon: What do you most remember from your work?

Ellie: When I went to Asia right after the tsunami.

Adam: My last visit to Africa. People who escaped from Sudan, living in tents. Terrible.

Shannon: Some children want to become journalists – what would you tell them?

Adam: You should read a lot of papers and websites, watch the news on TV, and listen to the radio.

When you’re brave enough you should try to get experience on the school radio or magazine.

Ellie: I agree. And work hard at school, go to university and take a course in journalism.

Shannon: Thank you and good luck with your work.

Cooking camp. You never cook.

David: You don’t know me yet. I’ve got real talent for spaghetti! Just boil the water, pour the pasta in,

open a jar of sauce, and in twenty minutes lunch is ready!

June: Yeah, right. So I should go on the drama camp and play Juliet on the gala night?

David: You hate acting. Get serious, will you? We have to decide.

June: If I were you I would go for the sports camp. All the boys from your football team will be

there.

David: I know. But you see, I’ve always wanted to travel in space. I love Star Wars. And during the

school year I never have time….

June: You must be joking. You and the sciences are worlds apart!

David: Maybe at school. But I have a telescope at home and watch the stars sometimes. Do you know

that in summer you can see meteors shooting across the sky?

June: So I know where you’re going. But don’t get lost in the black hole on the astronomy camp.

David: I won’t. And where are you going? Will you be counting frogs on the nature camp?

June: Forget it! If we are allowed to take our own CDs and organise discos, I will go on the music

and dance camp.

David: I knew it!
