So,thisisChristmas,andIlookaroundatmyemptyhome.Ihavenotreeupor
decorations.Ididn’tmailthoseChristmascardsthatstillsitintheboxonthecoffeetable.
Idon’thaveanyonetospendthedaywith.Myfamilyisallinanotherstate,myfriendsall
haveplans.It’sjustmesittinghereonChristmasEvefeelingsorryformyself.IguessI
onlyhavemyselftoblamebyputtingworkbeforeanythingelse.Icouldhavequickly
jumpedonaplanehome.Iwouldhavebeensippinghotchocolatenexttothefireplace
withmom,dad,andmysiblings.Whenyouwantyourcareertomoveforward,yourisk

Icurlmyselfuponthecouchandcoverupwithablanket.Iopentheromancenovel
thatI’vemeanttoreadforthelastfewmonths.Igetafewchapter’sinandtossthebook

aroundforatleastanhour.Iheaddowntowntowardsthepark.Familiesareice-skatingon
theoutdoorrink.Menandwomaninloveandholdinghands.Istopandwatchallthe
happypeoplemillingaround.IlookovertomyrightandseethelastoftheChristmas
treesforsale.Igetoutofmycarandwalkovertothem.Touchingthepinesandsmelling
thescent,theygiveoff.Myfamilydoesn’tuserealtrees;mymomisallergictothesmell.
NotwatchingwhereI’mgoing,ItripoveratinyCharlieBrowntree.ThankGod,Ididn’t
fall;thatwouldhavebeenembarrassing.
