So,thisisChristmas,andIlookaroundatmyemptyhome.Ihavenotreeupor

decorations.Ididn’tmailthoseChristmascardsthatstillsitintheboxonthecoffeetable.

Idon’thaveanyonetospendthedaywith.Myfamilyisallinanotherstate,myfriendsall

haveplans.It’sjustmesittinghereonChristmasEvefeelingsorryformyself.IguessI

onlyhavemyselftoblamebyputtingworkbeforeanythingelse.Icouldhavequickly

jumpedonaplanehome.Iwouldhavebeensippinghotchocolatenexttothefireplace

withmom,dad,andmysiblings.Whenyouwantyourcareertomoveforward,yourisk

everything.

Icurlmyselfuponthecouchandcoverupwithablanket.Iopentheromancenovel

thatI’vemeanttoreadforthelastfewmonths.Igetafewchapter’sinandtossthebook

aside.Blah,blah,it’sallthesame;thelovestorywithanHEA.Istarttowonderifthat

willeverbeme,findingtheloveofmylife.Ilaughtomyself;ithasn’thappenedyet,why

aroundforatleastanhour.Iheaddowntowntowardsthepark.Familiesareice-skatingon

theoutdoorrink.Menandwomaninloveandholdinghands.Istopandwatchallthe

happypeoplemillingaround.IlookovertomyrightandseethelastoftheChristmas

treesforsale.Igetoutofmycarandwalkovertothem.Touchingthepinesandsmelling

thescent,theygiveoff.Myfamilydoesn’tuserealtrees;mymomisallergictothesmell.

NotwatchingwhereI’mgoing,ItripoveratinyCharlieBrowntree.ThankGod,Ididn’t

fall;thatwouldhavebeenembarrassing.

It’sreallygoodtobebackhome.Don’tgetmewrong,itwasnicebeinginmy

hometownagain,butthere’ssomethingsatisfyingaboutbeinginyourownhome.When

youbecomeanadult,andbuyyourownplace,youmakethespaceyours.Everything

insidefromthecolorsyouchoosetopaintyourwallstothefurnitureyoupickout,it

becomesyourcomfortzone.Afterahardday’swork,youcomehomeandyouunwind.

Theonlyrulesyouhavetolivebyaretheonesyousetforyourself.Youdon’thaveyour

parentstellingyouwhatyoucanandcan’tdo.Youdon’thaveyourbossfromwork

breathingdownyourneck.IfIdon’twanttovacuummyfloorstoday,Ihavenobody

tellingmethatIhavetodoit.It’smorethanthatthough,whenIboughtthishouseI

thoughtaboutthefuture.ThisiswhereIwanttolive,tobuildafamilyandgrowoldhere.

Afterbustingmyassalldayatwork,Iwantedaplacethatisfilledwithlove,fourwalls
