Placement Test

Introduction

English Plus is a flexible four-level course, which students can start at False beginner
(English Plus 1) or at Elementary (English Plus 2) level. Both English Plus 1 and English
Plus
2 are designed to be entry levels into the series.

The Placement Test is designed to help teachers decide which level of English Plus is
most suitable for a particular group of students, or to decide which groups individual
students should be placed in. The test should be administered at the start of the first
school year.

The Placement Test will also help teachers identify language areas that need revision
and/or remedial work at the start of the course. All levels of English Plus offer a
Diagnostic Test (available on the Test Bank MultiROM) with tasks to help you decide
what revision and/or remedial work you should focus on. All levels of the series provide a
Starter unit to revise the basic language points or help you address issues with mixed
ability in the group.

Teachers should allow about 40 minutes for students to complete the test.

Assessment Guide

Award one point for each correct answer. Maximum points: 60. Interpret the scores as
follows:

0

–25 points:

Start the course with English Plus 1, and cover all the
lessons from the Starter unit.

26

–35 points:

Start the course with English Plus 1, and use the
Diagnostic Test to decide which lessons from the Starter
unit are needed for revision/remedial work.

36

–45 points:

Start the course with English Plus 1, and skip the Starter
unit. You may use the Diagnostic Test to identify any
language areas that need revision/remedial work.

46

–55 points:

Start the course with English Plus 2, and cover all the
lessons from the Starter unit.

The Placement Test is just one indicator of students’ abilities. Teachers may decide to
supplement it with an oral interview to make a more accurate assessment. You may
wish to use one of the Speaking tests from the Test Bank MultiROM. Students whose
scores fall on the borderlines should be placed in the lower level and monitored closely
at the start of the course.

Note: the Placement Test is designed to assess students’ level and should not be used
for awarding marks, as failure in the more difficult questions is not a reflection on any
particular student’s work in English but is inherent in the nature of level testing.
