Dahlia Bedspread

MATERIALS: Solarized Crochet Cotton, 38 cones (800 yds) Ecru or
White. Crochet hook size 8.

Ch 10, join.

RND 1: 18 tr in circle.

RND 2: 24 sc, using back of st only.

RND 3: 28 sc, using back of st only.

RND 4: 36 sc, using back of st only.

RND 5: 48 sc, using back of st only.

RND 6: 54 sc, using back of st only.

RND 7: * ch 4, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, and repeat from * around.

RND 8: Sc in each ch st and 3 sc over each dc.

RND 9 to 18 incl: Like rnd 8 always having 3 sc in the middle one of
the 3 sc of preceding rnd. When 18th rnd is finished, the dahlia will
have 18 leaves and each leaf will have 28 sc. Fold leaf so that the
first 6 sts will lie over the last 6 sts of the previous leaf.

RND 19: * Work 6 sc of the 12 sc as they lie together. Leave 16 sc
loose and in back of them ch 4 and repeat from * around, join.

RND 20 and 21: Sc in each st.

RND 22: 2 dc with ch 3 between, * ch 1, 13 dc with ch 1 between,
skipping 1 sc each time. This covers 3 leaves. Ch 3, dc in same
space as last, and repeat from * around, join.

RND 23: 2 dc with ch 3 between in the ch 3 of previous rnd. Ch 1, dc
over dc, ch 1 over ch 1 all around. Each rnd has 2 dc, ch 3 between
over each corner of the dahlia, thus widening the medallion.

RND 24: Dc in each st all around with 2 dc and ch 3 at each corner.

RND 25: After the 2 dc with ch 3 between, * 5 dc, 1 popcorn st (7 dc
in one st. Remove hook and pass hook through the st of the first dc
and st of the last dc and draw together. Ch 1 to hold it solid), and
repeat from * 3 times forming 4 popcorns in section, widen as usual
and repeat on the 6 sides.

RNDS 26 and 27: Solid dc (be sure to widen at corners).

RND 28: * Dc, ch 1, and repeat from * all around widening as usual.
Must be 20 holes. The hexagon blocks may be sewed or crocheted
together.

Use Solarized Crochet Cotton.

EDGING: * Ch 5, turn, 3 dc in 3rd st, 1 ch, 3 dc in same st, ch 5 to
turn, and repeat from * for length desired. Sew on spread when edge
is completed.

FRINGE: Using cardboard 10 inches wide, wrap 12 times, double
knot fringe taking 6 strands in each for second knot.

of No. 126 Spanish Red; a few yards of Black; and J. & P. COATS
TATTING-CROCHET, Art. A.2I, Size 70: 4 balls of No. 12 Black.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 7 and No. 14. A hairpin lace
staple, 5\8 inch wide. . . . Black sequins. ... A doll 11 inches tall; waist
5 1/2 inches.

DRESS—Skirt . . . Starting at top with Spanish Red and No. 7 hook,
ch 42 to reach loosely around doll's waist. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from
hook, * ch 5, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Turn.

2nd row: In each loop across make sc, 9 dc and sc. Ch 4, turn.

3rd row: Skip first sc and dc, picking up front loop only, * (dc in next
dc, ch 1) 7 times; holding back on hook the last loop of each dc make
dc in next dc and in first dc of next scallop, thread over and draw
through all loops on hook (joint-dc made), ch1. Repeat from * across.
Turn. Hereafter pick up back loop only.

4th row: Sl st in next ch and in next dc, ch 3, * tr in each ch and in
each dc across scallop to within last dc, make a joint-dc over next dc
and first dc of next scallop. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in

5th row: Sc in each dc and in each ch across. Break off. TRIM . . .
With Black Tatting-Crochet and No. 14 hook, make a strip of hairpin
lace about 40 inches long.

HEADING . . . Keeping the twist in all loops, attach thread to first loop
on hairpin lace, sc in same place, sc in each loop across. Break off.

SCALLOPED EDGE . . . String sequins on thread, attach thread to
first loop on other side of hairpin lace, draw 1 sequin over loop, sc in
same place, * (ch 3, sc in next loop) twice; ch 3, draw 1 sequin in
place, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Break off. Sew in place
over 5th and 6th rnds of Skirt, forming scallops as in illustration.

Make 2 more pieces the same way and sew to Skirt, spacing evenly.
Make another piece about 7 inches long and sew around neck of
dress. Make a small bow with black, grosgrain ribbon and sew to front
of dress. Make a piece of hairpin lace as before about l l/2 inches,
gather straight edge to form a fan. Sew a piece of wire to center to
hold . in shape. Sew to right hand.

Make another piece of hairpin lace, draw doll's hair to top of head.
Sew hairpin lace around head. Sew a flower to front. Sew another
flower to left wrist.

SLIPPER (Make 2) ... Starting at center of bottom with Black "Knit-
Cro-Sheen," ch 14. 1st rnd: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch
across, 5 dc in last ch (toe); working along opposite side of starting
chain make dc in each ch across. Join.

2nd rnd: Sc in each dc around.

3rd and 4th rnds: Sc in each sc around to within center 3 sc at toe,
work off 3 sc as 1 sc, sc in each remaining sc around.

5th rnd: Sc in each sc around. Join and break off.

PETTICOAT . . . Cut a strip of 6-inch crinoline hemline binding 18
inches long. Gather across one long side to fit around doll's waist.
Sew back seam, leaving a 1-inch opening at top. Sew bias binding
around top. Sew a hook and eye at back. Turn up hem to correspond
with length of skirt.

PANTIES . . . Starting at waist make a chain long enough to reach
around widest part of doll. Join, being careful not to twist.

1st to 4th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join.

For 11-inch dolls work 9 rnds (instead of 4 rnds). Ch 4 for crotch and
sl st directly opposite. Break off. Draw cord through sts of 1st rnd.

Sunlight Hat

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (5 balls) or J. & P. Coats (3 balls)
Mercerized Crochet, size 30, color 9 Yellow. Milward's steel crochet
hook No. 7. 2 yds. millinery wire and 2 yds. of ribbon.

Crown. Beginning at tip, ch 10, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: *
Ch 10, s c in ring, repeat from * until 24 loops are made, then ch 6.

2nd rnd: S c in 1st loop, * ch 5, s c in next loop, repeat from *
around, ending, with s c under ch-6 of previous rnd.

3rd rnd: Ch 5, s c in each loop with ch-5 between s cs.

4th rnd: * Ch 3, 5 d c under next loop, ch 3, s c in next loop, ch 4, s c
in same loop, repeat frorn * until 12 5-d c groups are made, then ch 3,

flat) in each sp.

14th and 15th rnds: S c in each s c. With thread double work a rnd
of s c holding along wire and working over it so that it is completely
covered. Fasten wire neatly. Break off. Sew ribbon band inside of
crown adjusting headsize. Starch hat or use white shellac and block.
Trim hat as in illustration.

Shell Motif

Make these Medallions of fine or heavy thread and join into lovely
Luncheon Sets, Table Runners, Tablecloths, Buffet Sets or odd
Doilies.

MATERIALS-Daisy Mercerized Crochet Cotton in size 10 to 50.
Crochet hook size 7 to 14.

SHELL MOTIF - Square - Ch 18, dc in 9th st from hook, (ch 2, dc in
next 3d st) 3 times. * Ch 5, turn, sk last dc, dc in next dc, (ch 2, dc in
next dc) twice, ch 2, dc in next 3d st. Repeat from * twice.

1st Row-Ch 3, 2 dc over bar of last dc, * (dc in next st, 2 dc over next

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED
CROCHET, Art. A.104, Size 30: 3 balls of White; or
Clark's O.N.T. Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Art. B4, Size 30: 8
balls of White; or Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet, Art, B.34, Size
30: 3 balls of White. Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 10. A fine
Milwards Sewing Needle. 5 vials of pink and 2 vials each of yellow
and green beads. Using sewing needle, thread 1 vial of pink beads
and 78 yellow beads on working thread.

FIRST MOTIF ... Starting at center, ch 10. join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring. join to top of ch-3.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, insert hook in same place as sl st, slip a bead in
place, draw loop through and complete an sc (beaded sc made), (all

On tissue paper, draw a true square about an inch larger than
finished Block. Stretch and pin Block right-side-down on this pattern
on a padded ironing board and steam with a wet cloth and hot iron,
then press through a dry cloth until perfectly dry. A Spread pressed in
this way will keep its shape and flatness indefinitely.

BORDER——With Yellow, (ch 3, 3 dc in 1st st, ch 2, 1 sl st in same
1st st) 4 times, 1 sl st at base of 1st petal, ch 3, remove hook. Let this
3-ch lie up back of 1st petal, insert hook in 2d dc of 1st petal, catch

loop and pull through, which brings thread in proper place to continue
work. Repeat from * until a length of Flowers long enough to go
across 1 side of Spread is made, allowing exactly 15 Flowers across
each Block. Now make another Flower. After 4th Petal, ch 5, remove
hook, insert in top of next-to-last petal, catch loop and pull through.
This forms corner Flower. Repeat from * around Spread, joining end

Heading Row Around Inside of Border—Join Cream to side petal

Oval Shell Bag

MATERIALS:

5 tubes "Raphael Brand" Gimp (Cebelia #10 can be substituted),
Lining, one 7" Oval Hinge Frame, Link Handle.

STITCH: Use Single Crochet and Shell Stitch throughout.

SHELL STITCH: 6 Treble Crochets in same stitch make one Shell
Stitch. To increase Shell make 8 and 10 Treble Crochets in same
stitch.

NOTE: When making Shells pick up back loop only. When making
Single Crochets pick up both loops on foundation chain only and go
directly through the center of Shells.

TO START: Ch 18.

lst row: Make 6 tr c's in sixth ch from hook, * skip 2 chs 1 sc in next

Sweet Sue Snood

Smart and a favorite, the demure mesh snood.

MATERIALS: J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of any color. Steel
crochet hook No. 4. 1 yd grosgrain ribbon, 1 3\4 inches wide. 11
inches of round elastic.

Make all chains loosely. To make foundation chain: * Ch 4, sc in back
loop of last ch (forming a knot). Repeat from * until piece measures
12 inches.

1ST ROW: Sc in center ch between 4th and 5th knots from hook, *
(ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, sc in center ch between
next 2 knots. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last ch. (Ch 3,
sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW: Sc in 1st loop, * (ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size
10, 2 balls each of 12 Black and 106 Sport Green. Milward's Steel
crochet hook No. 5 or 6.

With Green, make ch about 19 inches long, turn. 1st row: 2-tr cluster

Rnd 4: Sc in next 28 sc. Insert a small marble. (Sc in next 2 sc
worked off as 1 sc) 5 times; (sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc) 5 times. Fasten
off. Make 4. Sew to underside of Base Border, evenly spaced. Make
a 2d Candlestick.

Block Flower Holder over bottom of a quart jar. Wrap base of a
candle in waxed paper, insert in Candlestick cup, turn upside down in
a jar or bottle, block base flat and leave until dry.

Starching instructions: For doilies dissolve 2 heaping tablespoons (3
for other pieces), of Argo Gloss Starch in 1\2 cup cold water, add to 1
quart warm water, heat and boil briskly for several minutes, stirring
constantly. Add 1 cup cold water and cool until comfortable to handle.
Add enough liquid Bluing to make starch a deep blue. Dip crochet in
starch, squeezing the starch thru it thoroughly. Remove, squeeze out
excess starch, roll in paper towels and leave for an hour or two. Then
rub off any excess starch with paper towel, stretch on waxed paper
and block ass given in individual instructions.

MATERIALS—Lily Pearl Cotton, size 5: — 2-balls Lt Ecru, and partial
ball each Blue, Lt. Steel Blue, Salmon Rose and Mid-Apple Green.
Lily Six Strand Floss.—2-skems each Maroon and Dk. Green. 1-skein
each Dp. Peach, Black, Med. Green, Dusty Rose and Dk. Salmon
Rose (or other colors), 1\2-yd. Oyster White linen, 1\2-yd. Lt. Green
muslin A picture frame 13"xl6" glass size. Crochet hook size 5.

MAT—Cut cardboard for a loose fit in frame. Cut out center 3" from
bottom, 2" from other 3 sides. Cut linen 1" outside edges, pull taut
and fasten on back with gummed tape, slashing inside corners. In Lt.
Ecru, make ch 2" longer than bottom width, tr in 15th st from hook,
(ch 4, tr in next 5th st) repeated across for width (stretched). Cut off
excess ch.

ROW 2—Ch 9, turn, tr in next tr, (ch 4, tr in next tr) across to 5th st of
end ch. Repeat 4 times to cover bottom. Then work up each side (4
sps wide). Connect top corners with a ch (5 ch for each sp minus 1

Cut Green muslin 1" larger all around than mat opening. Pin motifs on
muslin, following illustration, then tack lightly. Twist larkspur sprays so
flowers are on alternate sides of ch stem. When finished, stretch and
pin right-side-down, and steam and press dry thru a cloth. Fasten
with gummed tape on a 2d piece of cardboard cut 1\8" smaller than
outside of frame. Place glass and mat in frame, then tack 2d
cardboard on back of frame, with very short nails or tacks.

Work Basket

MATERIALS: Lily Skytone Mercerized Crochet Cotton—1 ball Cream
and 2 balls Skipper Blue (or other desired colors). Lily Pearl Cotton
Size 3—1 ball each Yellow and Lt. Green. Crochet Hook size 3.

BASE: Using 2 strands of Blue, ch 43, 4 dc in 5th st from hook, dc in

Stiffen basket by rubbing and patting with a cloth dipped in hot, thick,
cooked starch. Cut a heavy white cardboard oval to fit inside base,
and weight down. Weight down Lid too, to keep it flat. Cut a long strip
of thin cardboard and roll to fit inside the basket to brace sides.
Fasten another strip snugly around outside. Pull sides up to an even
height . When perfectly dry, sew lid to sides between 8 scallops
across back edge. Give 3 coats of White Shellac.

PINCUSHION . . . Starting at center with Beauty Pink, ch 2. 1st rnd: 7
sc in 2nd ch from hook. Hereafter pick up back loop only. 2nd rnd: 2

next sc. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2
sc. Repeat from * around. Inc 7 sc evenly on each rnd until piece
measures 3 1\4 inches in diameter. Join and break off. Make another
piece the same way.

With wrong side facing, sew pieces together, leaving opening large
enough to insert pincushion. Insert pincushion and sew up opening.
With Black embroider lines around pincushion.

BUTTON . . . With Black, ch 2, work as for pincushion until piece
measures same as button mold, then * work off 2 sc as 1 sc (1 sc
decreased), sc in next sc. Repeat from * around until 6 sc have been
decreased. Insert button mold and continue decreasing until ' all sc's
have been worked off. Break off. Sew button to center of pincushion.
Sew pincushion to center of basket. With front of basket facing,

d, 5 ch, 3 d into the next sp, repeat from * into each of the 8 sp; there
will be 6 d between each p of 5 ch.

3d round. * 9 ch, 1 lt into the d over the lst lt between 2 p of the
previous round, 9 ch, 1 d into the d over the next lt between 2 p,

mesh around the top of bag make the connection directly over the
medallion on bag, Fasten featherbone across back in hem of lining.

For the Strings

Join the thread to the corner of bag, ch 65, draw the ch through lst
mesh between flap and bag and join with d to a large bone ring, ch 65
and draw thread through same mesh, join with d to the same place
where lst ch of 65 started, 3 d into next sp, 1 d into next sp, ch 64,
skip one mesh and pass the chain through the next, 1 d to ring, ch
64, pass the ch through the same mesh and continue across bag,
making each ch about 1 less as you go towards the center of bag and
increase 1 st as you go towards the other end, being careful to have
the chains the correct length, and finish with 65 ch.

Heart Sachet

MATERIALS: CLARK'S O.N.T. "BRILLIANT," 1 ball. Steel Crochet
Hook No. 8. 1 yard of ribbon, 5/8 inch wide.

Starting at upper part of heart, ch 10.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch; in next ch make sc,
ch 3 and sc; sc in next 4 ch. Ch 5, turn.

2nd to 5th rows incl: 2 sc in 1st sc (an inc made), sc in each sc
across to the ch-3. In ch-3 loop make sc, ch 3 and sc (2 more
increases); sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc (another
inc). Ch 5, turn.

6th, 7th and 8th rows: Work off 2 sc as 1 sc (a dec made); work
across, increasing in ch-3 loop as before and decreasing an sc at end
of row. Ch 5, turn.

9th and 10th rows: Work as before, decreasing 2 sc (instead of 1 sc)
at both ends of row--to dec 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc twice. Ch 5,
turn.

11th row: Dec 2 sc as before, * ch 3, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from *
across, making sc, ch 3 and sc in center ch-3 loop and decreasing 2
sc at end of row as before. Fasten off. Lay this piece aside.

Make another piece same as this.

Place these 2 pieces so that loops along edges correspond, and work
edging over both thicknesses as follows:

1st row: Attach thread to beginning of 1st row, * ch 5, dc in next
double loop. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st at opposite end
of 1st row. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: 5 sc in each sp across, ending with sl st in same place
where thread was attached. Ch 7, turn.

3rd row: *Skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, ch 7. Repeat from * across,
ending row to correspond with beginning. Ch 7, turn.

4th row: * Sc in next loop, ch 7. Repeat from * across. Ch 7, turn.

5th row: * Sc in next loop, ch 1, in next loop make 6 tr with p
between--to make a p, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook--ch 1. Repeat
from * across, ending row to correspond with beginning. Fasten off.

Sew edges of hearts together stuffing with cotton batting with sachet
powder between, before opening becomes too small.

Starting at top of heart with 1/2 yard of ribbon, pass ribbon through dc
sps and tie a knot. Tie ends in a bow, 2 1/2 inches up from knot just
made.

Trim ends.
