RUBRIC:
Hello everyone! Today’s test is the London Tests of English Level One.
The theme of this test is Books and Book Clubs. This test lasts one hour
and thirty minutes. There are six tasks. Tasks One and Two are
listening. You must listen to the tape and write your answers in this
booklet. Good luck!
Task One:
Talking in the kitchen
Greg Turner is in his bedroom when someone calls from the kitchen.
Listen to the conversation and answer the questions. Write a short
answer in each space. The first one is an example. You will hear the
conversation twice. Do as much as you can the first time and finish your
work the second time. You have one minute to look at the questions and
read again what you have to do.

MOTHER:
Greg, can you come down?
GREG:
What do you want, mum? I’m busy.
I’m revising. Then I’m going to watch a fantastic horror film on TV after the
news.
MOTHER:
Watch a film? But what about the washing up? You forgot to do it this
afternoon and I don’t have time to do it now.
GREG:
Why not? Are you going to Jane’s house?
MOTHER:
No, I’m going to the theatre with Jill. The play starts at seven
and I don’t want to be late.
GREG:
OK mum. Just coming.
MOTHER:
Thanks. By the way, how’s the revision going?
GREG:
OK. I did Maths last night and I finished my French revision this afternoon.
MOTHER:
When’s your next exam, Greg?
GREG:
Tomorrow. I’ve got English. I’ve got French on Thursday and Maths is on
Friday.
MOTHER:
You’ll be glad when the exams are over.
GREG:
Too right mum, I will.
2
MOTHER:
What are you going to do after the exams, Greg? Go to a pop concert?
GREG:
A pop concert? No. I haven’t got money for that.
MOTHER:
Well, go to a football match with Steve, then.
GREG:
A football match? Same problem, mum. No money.
MOTHER:
What about going bowling, then? That’s cheap.
GREG:
Yes, I know, but I don’t want to go bowling. Bowling’s boring.
MOTHER:
Well, haven’t you got any ideas?
GREG:
Not at the moment mum, no.
MOTHER:
OK, well it’s time for me to go now. Now where did I put my car keys?
GREG:
They’re on the table in the dining room. Have a nice time and drive safely.
MOTHER:
I will. The play ends at ten o’clock so I’ll be back at half past. Enjoy
the film.
GREG:
And you enjoy the play, mum. Bye

MALE:
That was Ben Smith with information about this week’s new films. Now
here’s Samina to tell us about sports.
FEMALE:
Thanks John. Yes, there are a lot of great sports in our area, not just
tennis, football or swimming in the new pool. Last Thursday I went horse
riding at Preston Farm. The horses are great. You can ride for one or two
hours. The farm stables are open seven days a week, starting from eight in
the morning till dark. Prices are ten pounds in the morning and fifteen
pounds after three.
At Holford, near Preston Farm, you can go hot air ballooning. You fly above
the hills and rivers and see the countryside. You have a pilot to help you.
An hour’s flight costs seventy-five pounds, two hours costs a hundred and
forty pounds and a three-hour flight costs two hundred pounds. At the end
of a flight a car takes you home.
Now back to you, John. What’s new in town?
MALE:
Thanks Samina. Now last Monday I ate at Mario’s, the new Italian
restaurant in Market Street. The food was excellent. Phone Mario’s on
Preston double four seven nine three oh one to find out more about menus
and prices.
On Thursday I went to the Gold Book Club, a book club for young people.
Every week you get three new books to read and then you meet to talk
about them. It’s a great way to make new friends and read interesting
books. The club costs five pounds to join but you don’t pay for meetings.
FEMALE:
Thanks for that, John. Well it’s eleven fifteen now and that’s all for
tonight. Join us next Wednesday and Thursday at ten and Friday at nine
thirty.
GREG:
Hello mum.
MOTHER: Hi
Greg.
GREG:
Did you like the play?
MOTHER:
Yes, I did. It was very sad in places but I really enjoyed it.
What about you? What was your film like?
4
GREG:
It was terrible. I turned it off.
But after, I listened to a good programme on the radio. It gave me an idea
for a new hobby. I’m going to join a book club.
MOTHER:
Really? That sounds interesting …
