Expressive Function - one of the functions of a linguistic sign, consisting in the ability to express the speaker’s
emotional state and his subjective attitude toward designated objects and phenomena of reality.

The referential function of any singular term is to provide a positive answer to the question: ‘which individual is
being spoken of?’, that is, to achieve determinacy of reference.

conative function (or the appellative function) - A function of language or, more generally, communication, that is
focused on, and concerned with influencing the behaviour of the addressee.
