Indonesians have two words for The Sun:
Matahari
and
Surya
. These both come from Sanskrit, the
ancient language of India.
Matahari
means “Eye of the Day”.
Surya
is even more interesting! Sanskrit is an Indo-European language, which means that it shares a
common history with other languages like Persian, Greek, Latin, German, Russian and English.
Surya
is, in
fact, the same word as Solar! Even after many thousands of years apart, some words are still recognizable!
Some others include:
nama
/ name,
kapala
/ head (cap or capital),
dana
/ donation.
dua
/ two,
tiga
/ three,
Maharaja
/ Prince or King (Maha is Mega or Major, Raja is Rex, Regal, etc).

Noun Classfiers are used to identify what type of noun that is being talked about. For example, we
might say “a head of cattle” or “a piece of cheese”. This sort of construction is used heavily in
Indonesian. There are actually over 40 noun classifiers, though many are rarely used by everyone.
