e-lesson
Week starting: 22
nd
March 2004
1. Air Travel Trivia
Heathrow Airport opened on March 25
th
1948 in a muddy field on the outskirts of London. It
has come a long way in the 56 years since it had just a tent for Customs. It now has four
terminals (with the fifth on its way), more than 50,000 employees and is the busiest
international airport in the world. This week we take a look at air travel in a quiz worth a
maximum of 100 points for 40 correct answers.
Level
Intermediate and upwards
How to use the lesson
1. Divide the class into pairs or small teams.
2. Tell your students they are going to complete a quiz which contains a total of 40 questions
(or fewer if you only want to use one of the two worksheets) about air travel. Tell them that
each correct answer scores them two points. They will need to work together to get as many
answers right as they can. All students will have the same quiz. It is not necessary to be a
world traveller to be able to answer many of the questions but a decent general knowledge
will help a lot.
3. Give each student in the class Part 1 (42 points) and Part 2 (58 points) of the Worksheet.
(If time is short, drop either worksheet and just give students one).
4. After they have finished, check answers in open class. The pair/team with the most correct
answers is the winner.
Alternative
If your students have access to the internet, and you have more time, you could develop this
activity by getting your students to find as many answers as they can.
