This is BBC Radio Three. It’s one o’clock. Now, the news headlines from John Shay:

The former Northern Ireland secretary Peter Mandelson has vowed to clear his name after
resigning last week. Writing in the Sunday Times, he insists he didn’t lie about his
involvement in two Hindu brothers attempt to obtain a British passport and said he’d been
rushed into resigning. Downing Street has condemned press coverage of a briefing given by
Tony Blair’s spokesman Ernest Campbell in which he was quoted as saying that Mr
Mandelson ‘had lost his normal focus’.

British experts have joined the search for survivors of Friday’s devastating earthquake in
India. So far only a handful of people have been found alive in Rajbul in the western state of
Gujarat. Twenty thousand people are now feared to have died. It’s been confirmed that a
British doctor was among those who were killed. Ashok Susanti, who worked at a firm in
Hampshire, was trapped when a building collapsed in Ahmadabad. He had travelled to India
for a memorial service for his mother.

A bomb attack in the Zimbabwean capital Harare has destroyed the printing press of the
country’s only privately owned daily newspaper. The attack against The Daily News follows
demonstrations against the paper by government supporters led by the War Veteran
Association.

A search is to resume this afternoon for a fisherman who’s missing off the coast of Jersey.
Paul Rickson was on a boat which sank on Thursday. The body of the boat’s skipper John
Roberts was recovered on Friday.

SECTION 2.

It was the night preceding the day fixed for his coronation, and the young King was sitting
alone in his beautiful chamber. His courtiers had all taken their leave of him, bowing their
heads to the ground. The boy had flung himself back with a deep sigh of relief on the soft
cushions of his embroidered couch, lying there, wild-eyed and open mouthed, like a brown
woodland Faun or some young animal of the forest newly snared by the hunters.
And, indeed, it was the hunters, who had found him, coming upon him almost by chance as,
bare-limbed and pipe in hand, he was following the flock of the poor goatherd who had
brought him up and whose son he had always fancied himself to be.
He was the child of the old King’s only daughter by a secret marriage with one much beneath
her in station – a stranger, some said, who, by the wonderful magic of his lute-playing had
made the young Princess love him. Others spoke of an artist from Rimini, to whom the
Princess had shown much, perhaps too much honour, and who had suddenly disappeared from
the city, leaving his work in the Cathedral unfinished.
No more than a week old, the infant had been stolen away from his mother’s side as she slept
and given into the charge of a common peasant and his wife, who were without children of
their own and lived in a remote part of the forest, more than a day’s ride from the town.

Grief, or the plague, as the court physician stated, or, as some suggested, a swift Italian poison
administered in a cup of spiced wine, slew the white girl who had given him birth. As the
trusty messenger, bearing the child across his saddle, knocked at the door of the goatherd’s
hut, the body of the Princess was being lowered into an open grave dug in a deserted
churchyard beyond the city gates. In the grave, it was said, another body was also lying – that
of a young man of a marvellous and foreign beauty, whose hands were tied behind him and
whose breast was stabbed with many red wounds.
Such, at least, was the story that men whispered to each other. Certain it was that the old
King, when he was on his death-bed, whether moved by remorse for his great sin, or merely
desiring that the kingdom should not pass away from his line, had the boy sent for, and, in the
presence of the Council, acknowledged him as his heir.

Announcer: Welcome to Radio Three Travel Tips. Our guest today is Rick Strange – writer,
photographer and seasoned traveller. Rick describes some of the best places to visit in
February.
Rick Strange:
February is a good time for long haul travel.
In Southeast and Central Asia – Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives – the weather is just
about perfect for sun-lovers with temperatures around the 30

°

Celsius mark. The humidity,

which many find uncomfortable in the months before the rains start in May or June, is also
relatively low. Inland touring to see the hill tribes of northern Thailand can be done in
reasonable comfort. The threat from malaria is at its lowest during the dry season, although it
is still advisable to take the recommended prophylactics. Multi-centre holidays are a good
idea at this time of year. Take a week or so to explore the Golden Triangle in northern
Thailand, perhaps take in a jungle trek, before flying for a relaxing rest at luxurious beach
hotels in the south of the country.
February is also a good month for a visit to the Caribbean – Tobago with its proliferation of
exotic birdlife, the Grenadines, where the hotel prices are down now, and the tiny Palm
Island, which is really well worth a visit. John Cadwell, who runs its one hotel, has recently
planted more than 5,000 palm trees to replace those lost to hurricanes, and will send his boat
over to Union Island to collect visitors from the small airport there. Incidentally, it is the only
airport I know where you have to walk across the single runway to the terminal, and are
advised to look both ways before crossing.
Nearer home, in Europe, February is one of the best months for skiing. The early snows have
been some of the best on record, and by now the excessive cold of the midwinter months will
be over. Remember though that February is a month when many French people take one of
their two annual holidays, so the hotel prices are anything but moderate and the lift queues
tend to be crowded.
Down under, the southern and central parts of Australia are hot and sunny, although the
easterly monsoons have already started in Darwin and the Cape York peninsula. The gorgeous
scenery of New Zealand is best seen at about this time of year, although the weather is
unpredictable.
Finally, February is high summer in South Africa and a good time to combine a safari in the
Kruger National Park with sightseeing in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where many top
hotels are affordable now.
