1/32 Scale Westland Whirlwind MkII
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION
The proposed Westland Whirlwind MkII model is designed as a classic paper kit and is relatively
easy to be build. Despite its relative simplicity, a special attention and precision in the assembly
procedure is required for achieving high resemblance to its prototype. Study carefully the
illustrative drawings, cutouts and present instruction before starting the work on the model. Try to
imagine the separate assembly phases and the purpose of each detail.
After the acquaintance with the model, you may start the assemblage. Follow the sequence given
in the instruction. Cut the necessary details shortly before using them in order to avoid possible
mistakes. Score all fold lines before cutting the details. The places of scoring are marked with
small thin lines on the continuation of fold lines outside the parts. The thick line markings show
where to make cuts on some details.
Do not be in a hurry with gluing - carefully check and shape the details until obtain the exact and
correct fit. Before starting the work get hold of the necessary tools: scissors, sharp modeling knife,
blunt knife for scoring the fold lines, prickle, ruler, nippers and grinding paper. Additional
materials necessary for the assemblage are: sheet of cardboard with thickness approximately 0.5
mm, a piece of wire with diameter 0.5 - 0.8 mm, transparent foil for the canopy. Supply with
proper glue. BISON Clear Adhesive, UHU or similar are recommended as the most appropriate
ones. Water based glue is not recommended. The model can be built in two variants ?with detailed
interior and transparent canopy or with paper canopy. You must choose the variant before starting
the work on the model You can also choose one of two prototype variants ?fighter or bomber
version ?so called 揥 hirlbomber? The necessary details for the bomber version are provided on
the bonus page 8.
Preparation for assembling includes gluing the page that contain the formers and strengthening
elements on 0.5 mm cardboard.
Start with the cockpit interior. Carefully form and glue the part 1 as shown on view A of the
instruction drawings. Glue inside 1 the ruder pedals 1d, control stick 1b-1c, pilot 抯 seat 1a
together with belts 1f , 1g and the instrument panel 1e.
Cut the central fuselage section 2, add all the connecting stripes and glue it, giving it a cylindrical
shape. Insert in 2 the prepared interior part 1 and glue the formers 2d and 2e, keeping the vertical
line of symmetry, as it is shown on view C. Position the rear amour plate 3 and the gun sight 4.
Then assembly the canopy5, following view B. After gluing the canopy to the central section 2,
continue with the nose sections of the fuselage 6 ?9, referring to view D. Complete the fuselage in
the same way, assembling its rear sections 10 ?12 and the vertical stabilizer 13. Note that if you
prefer the model with undercarriage in open position, you must cut the section 12 and place the
bottom of the wheel housing 12c. Also you can make the landing light on the vertical stabilizer
transparent, using part 13b. The sequence of the building the rear part of the fuselage is shown on
view E.
Now leave the ready fuselage apart and assembly the wing frame, following vie F. Assembly the
two wing frame halves and join them by using parts 14c, 14d, keeping the dihedral angle between
them. You can refer also the page 7 with 3-d views of the model. The parts 15f and 16f are used
only if you 抣 l want to represent the air intakes in the rout parts of the wings.
Cover the wing frame with the skin sections 15 ?16 as shown on view H. If you prefer to model
the cooling air intakes, cut the necessary holes in parts 15 and 16 and use position the intakes 15g
and 16g.
Continue with the preparation of the engine gondolas 17 ?20, following view H. For undercarriage
in open position you must cut the doors in parts 17 and 19, and after carefully forming to use parts
17f and 19f.
Now you can glue the wing to the fuselage, together with aerodynamic joints23, 26 and 49, and
glue the gondolas to the wing. The assembling process is shown on view I of the instruction.
Complete the planer of the aircraft, assembling the horizontal stabilizer 41 ?42, together with
aerodynamic joint 43 ?48. Then assembly the engine cowlings 21 ?28.
Continue with the undercarriage ?parts 58 - 65 as shown on the view J of the instruction. Cut the
wheels parts 64, 65 and 53 from 0.5 mm card, make the thin holes in the center of each of them
and glue them together. After drying the glue round the wheels with sandpaper and paint them
black.
Glue the undercarriage together with the wheel housing doors following view K.
Assembly the propellers 34 - 39 so that their shafts to be capable to rotate freely in their bearings
33, 38. Insert the propeller bearings in their places in front of the engines.
Add the remaining small details ?shell holder 72, gun photo camera cowling 69, Pitot tube 73,
antenna mast 74, gun sight 75, flap driver cowlings 66 and the 4 20 mm guns 68 ?71.
If you prefer the bomber variant of the aircraft, you can add the two 225 kg bombs together with
their bomb racks. Follow view O for their assemblage.
Now your model is ready. Enjoy.
