Instructor: In this lesson we will not use the informal or “tu” form of you. Instead, in 
this lesson we will use the formal word for you which is “usted.”   Listen to the following 
conversation.

René: Disculpe, señorita. ¿Habla usted inglés?

María: Sí, señor. Hablo inglés. ¿Habla usted español? 

René: Hablo un poquito de español.

María: ¿Es usted americano?

René: Sí, señorita.

María: ¿Cómo se llama usted?

René: Me llamo José Martínez. 

María: Mucho gusto.

René: El gusto es mío.

Instructor: Now listen again.  

René: Disculpe, señorita. ¿Habla usted inglés?

María: Sí, señor. Hablo inglés. ¿Habla usted español? 

René: Hablo un poquito de español.

María: ¿Es usted americano?

René: Sí, señorita.

María: ¿Cómo se llama usted?

René: Me llamo José Martínez.

Instructor: Imagine an American man standing next to a Spanish speaking woman. He 
would like to start a conversation. He says to her “excuse me.”   Escucha y repite.

Instructor:  ¿Cómo se dice “excuse me”?

María:  Disculpe.  

Instructor: This is how you address a young woman. Escucha y repite. 

René: Señorita. Señorita.

Instructor: Again, say the word “Miss.” 

María: Señorita. 

Instructor: Ahora trata de decir. “Excuse me, Miss.”.

Instructor: Instead of excuse me, you may wish to say “pardon” in Spanish. Listen and 
repeat after the male speaker says “pardon” in Spanish.

Instructor:  And how would you say “pardon, Miss”?

Instructor: The word American is pronounced slightly different when referring to a

Instructor: You may also hear a Spanish speaker respond to “mucho qusto,”by “El gusto 
es mío.” “El gusto es mío” means the pleasure is mine. Escuha y repite.

Instructor: Now imagine that you are an American man standing next to a Spanish 
speaking woman. You want to begin a conversation. Begin the conversation by saying:

Instructor: She doesn’t answer. So now ask her if she understands.

René: ¿Entiende usted? 

Instructor: Ask her if she understands English.

René: ¿Entiende usted inglés?

Instructor: How does she answer “No, Sir. I don't understand."

María: No, señor.  Yo no entiendo.

Instructor: How does she say: “I don’t understand English”?

María: Yo no entiendo inglés. 

Instructor: And how does she say  “I don’t speak English”

María: Yo no hablo inglés. 

Instructor: How does she say: “I understand Spanish”?

Instructor: And how does she say: “I speak and  understand Spanish”?

Instructor:  Tell her that you speak Spanish
