HypnosisIsn’tReal
Ifsomeonedoesnotbelievein“hypnosis”ortheydonotbelievetheycanbe
hypnotised,thentheyprobablycannotbehypnotisedbecauseeachofusmust
allowourselvestogointotrance.Hypnosisdoesnotchangeanyone’spersonality
orinterferewiththeirmindinanywayandhypnosisisinnowaydangerous.
WhatDoesitFeelliketobeHypnotised?
Hypnosisisnotsleep,althoughthesubjectwillmostlikelyfeelrestedand
refreshedafterasession.Hypnosisisnotdangerousbecausethemindisalwaysin
control.Noonecanget“stuck”inhypnosiseitherbecausetheirconsciousmind
wouldstepbackintoplayinthecaseofanemergency.
Thereisalsonofearthatsomeonewouldnotawakenbecausethemindisvery
strong.Hypnosisissimilartosleep,butitisnotsleep.Itisalsonot
unconsciousness.Itissimplyrelaxedconcentration.Someonemayrecall
everythingthehypnotistsaysduringasessionortheymaydriftinandoutof
consciousnessawareness.
Whilesomepeoplefeelliketheyhavenotactuallybeenhypnotised,othersfeelas
iftheyhavewokenfromadeepsleep.Itisnotnecessarytobeinadeeplevelof
tranceinordertomakechangesbecauseevenlightlevelsareextremelyeffective.
Ifpeoplecanfollowinstructionsandrelaxtheycanbehypnotised.
CautionsandContra-indications
Peoplethatarenotidealcandidatesforhypnosisarepeoplethatmightbeunder
theinfluenceofdrugsoralcoholorpeoplethathavealearningdisabilityor
mentaldisorder.Itisalsorecommendedthatthosewithepilepsynotbe
hypnotisedaswellbecausethestateofhypnosiscouldelicitseizures(onlyfor
thosewhocurrentlyhaveepilepsy).Inaddition,hypnosismaynotbesuitablefor
thosewithaheartconditionthosewithextremelyhighbloodpressureorthose
thathavepsychosisormentalillness.Inthecasewhereonehasachronichealth
conditionthehypnotherapistmayseekapprovalfromtheclient’shealthcare
provider.
IsThereAnyTouchingInvolved?
Typicallyhypnosisdoesnotinvolvetouchunlessthehypnotherapistspecifically
asksiftheycantouchsomeoneduringasession.Forexample,some
hypnotherapistsmaytouchashoulderorarmtohelpbringaboutarelaxedstate
ofmind,buttheyshouldalwaysaskforpermission.It’salwaysagoodideatoask
permissiontotouch,wheneveritisappropriate.Permissiontotouchcouldbe
phrasedlike:“Duringthissession,Imayneedtotouchyourhand,forearm,elbow,
shoulderorforehead,isthatallrightwithyou?”
TheHypnoticContract
Thehypnoticcontractisalsoagoodpracticetogetinto.Whenyouasksomeone
permissionbysayingsomethinglike:“Wouldyouliketodohypnosiswithme
now?”youcanbesurethattheydoinfactwanttobehypnotisedandareawilling
participant.
HowLongWillitTaketoGetHypnotised?
Hypnosisdoesnotneedtotakealotoftimeaswell,andasamatteroffactthe
moresomeoneexperiencehypnosisthefasteranddeepertheywillgointo
hypnotictrance.Itisnotnecessarytospendhoursinahypnosissessionbecause
evenashortsessioncanbeextremelyeffective.
Themindmaywanderduringahypnosissession,butthatiscompletelynormal
becausejustasitdoesinsleep,themindwillgoinandoutofdifferentstatesof
awareness.
Hypnosisisactuallyastateofveryheightenedawarenessandfocusandhypnosis
givesoneaccessintothesubconsciousmind,wherechangesaremoreeasilymade.
Sincethesubconsciousminddoesnotknowthedifferencebetweenrealityand
imagination,itbelieveswhateveryoutellitwhileintrance.Whilesomepeople
maynoticechangesimmediatelyothersfinditmaytakeabitlonger.Hypnosis

Instructthemtofeelasiftheheliumballoonsarepullinguptheirrighthand,
higherandhigherasthegasrisesandpullstheirarmsupwards.Atthesametime,
theycanimaginetheheavybookweighingtheirleftarmdownasifitisastrainto
doso.Youcanvarythisinanumberofways,bytellingthemyouareplacingmore
andmoreheavybooksinthelefthand,astheirrighthanddriftsupfurtherand

Nowconcentrateonyouarmandactasifthereisasteelrodfromyourshoulder
