Augustleanedagainstthedoorjambwhilecradlingacupofcoffeeinhishands.In

theshorttimehe’dbeeninthekitchen,Keeganhadalreadyspreadacrosstheking-size

bed,atoeateachcorner,hisarmsunderthepillow,andthesheetstossedtotheedge.

Sunlightfellacrosshisthighs,theswellofhisass,andtrickledawayatthemiddle

ofhisback,paintinggoldstreaksontohisbronzeskin.

Augustwouldalwayssavorthesequietmoments.There’dbeenatimewhenno

suchpeaceexisted.Whereeveninsilencethefearofdeathwasimminent.

Thatwasalmosttwoyearsagoandoverfourthousandmilesawayinaworld

wheremagiccameintheformofdancinglightsinthesky,icecrystalsintheairsplitting

thesun,andaherowrappedinanimalskins.
