Crossword puzzles are the most popular
word puzzle in the world. More than 40 million
people in the U.S. do crossword puzzles every
day.
Crossword puzzles are all over! You will fi nd
crossword puzzles in most newspapers.
The history of crossword puzzles is not very
long. They have only been around for a hundred
years. The fi rst ones were made in England.
Arthur Wynne invented the crossword
puzzle. It grew out of the word square puzzle. He
published the fi rst crossword puzzle in The New
York World on December 21, 1913.
The History of Crossword Puzzles
It didn’t look like today’s crossword puzzles.
It had no black squares. Wynne called it a “word
cross puzzle.”
In the 1920’s people started going crazy
about doing crosswords. Stores sold crossword
puzzles with everything from clothing to jewelry.
People lost their jobs because of doing crossword
puzzles at work!
In 1924, the fi rst book of crossword puzzles
was published.
Many crossword puzzles have themes. That
is, many of the words are related to a central idea.
Easy English NEWS crossword puzzles themes
were based on stories in the newspaper, and holi-
days of the month they were published.
