SIP Proxy

Server

Overview

The Cisco SIP Proxy Server is a call-control software package that enables service providers to build

scalable, reliable packet-voice networks today. Based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the

Cisco SIP Proxy Server provides a full array of call-routing capabilities to maximize network

performance in both small and large packet-voice networks.

The Cisco SIP Proxy Server delivers high-performance call processing, enabling service providers to quickly

and reliably deploy large-scale packet-voice networks. It can support a variety of different SIP server functions,

including Redirect Server, transaction stateful or stateless Proxy Server, and Registrar. As a key component in

Cisco SIP infrastructure solutions, the Cisco SIP Proxy Server provides the foundation for building advanced

voice networks and services.

Located in the core of a SIP network, the Cisco SIP Proxy Server routes calls between Cisco voice gateways,

Internet Protocol (IP) endpoints (such as IP phones), and application servers. By supporting multiple interfaces

to sources of routing information, the proxy server can efficiently execute routing decisions to obtain improved

productivity from a SIP network.

In addition to routing, the Cisco SIP Proxy Server enables call authorization decisions to be made within the

network, identifying authorized calls before they reach terminating voice gateways. During the setup and

teardown stages of a call, the proxy can generate Call Detail Records (CDRs) and pass the information to a

Remote Access Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) server for correlation.

By focusing on performance and reliability, the Cisco SIP Proxy Server enables service providers to quickly and

easily deploy new services on next-generation voice networks.

Features and Benefits

Real-Time Call Routing Capabilities

Call routing is central to the Cisco SIP Proxy Server’s role in a SIP network. Routing is handled in multiple

stages: number expansion, translation, and next-hop routing.

During the number-expansion phase, digits are added to (or stripped from) inbound numbers, as appropriate,

to create valid E.164 numbers. In the translation phase, the proxy server will query one or several modules,

such as the registry, a Gatekeeper Transaction Message Protocol (GKTMP) application server, or a Telephone

Number Mapping (ENUM) server. The translation phase might return a translated number or a next-hop

address. Once the translation is complete, the proxy server moves into the next-hop routing phase. In cases

where the next-hop is a Domain Name System (DNS) hostname, the proxy server performs a DNS query to

determine the appropriate IP address.

The Cisco SIP Proxy Server, in combination with Cisco voice gateways, enables the deployment of hybrid H.323 and

SIP networks. To route calls in a hybrid environment, the proxy server queries an H.323 gatekeeper for routing

information using standard Registration, Admission and Status (RAS) messages. The proxy server uses this routing

information to forward a call to the appropriate multiprotocol voice gateway using SIP.

Performance and Availability

To maximize service availability, the Cisco SIP Proxy Server is designed for deployment in server “farms”, allowing

multiple proxy servers to work together and share information. In a server farm, multiple physical servers can act as

one virtual server. A single server farm is represented by a domain name, where DNS is used to resolve the

appropriate IP address. A proxy farm can support up to three individual proxy servers (Figure 1). Registry and

routing information is synchronized across the proxy servers dynamically, allowing user agent information to be

maintained by the farm in case of a proxy failure. DNS services (SRV) records, or DNS A-record round-robin resolves

failures, by providing multiple destination addresses during a lookup.
