Meditation for Today
“Imagine Running”
If running or swimming, or maybe bicycling, is already part of your life,
something you do regularly to “clear your head” and recharge your batteries,
perhaps what Osho has just talked about sparks a recognition in you. Then you
already have a key in your hand – now your job is to use it with more intention
and greater awareness.
Even if your form of physical exercise is to go to a gym and work out on the
treadmill… take a look at how you approach it, and consider making it a
meditation. Turn off the television screen on the treadmill, leave the book in
your bag in the locker room. If you listen to music, put a sound track together
that is more purely energetic and supportive of your physical activity, instead
of triggering your mind and emotions. If your gym imposes a sound track on
everyone, take some earplugs with you. Anything you can do to support giving
your full awareness and energy to the physical activity will help lead you to the
space Osho is talking about.
The Method
If for some reason you cannot run, you don’t have the space or the time,
maybe you aren’t feeling well, the weather is lousy, or you’ve injured yourself,
try this:
Lie on your bed and imagine that you are running. Just imagine the whole
scene – the trees and the wind caressing your face, the sun, the beach, the
salty air… everything, visualize it and make it as colorful as possible.
Perhaps you have a memory of a beautiful morning in the past – running on
the beach, in the woods – imagine running, running, running…. Soon you will
find that your breathing is changing… and you keep going on and on… you can
go on like this for miles on end….
And you will be surprised that even doing this on the bed, you might attain to
moments when suddenly meditation, silence, inner peace is there.
Then… after maybe 15, 20 minutes:
Let the running come to an end and be still. Take a deep breath and rest for a
while – watch within and without.
