Tutorial 012: Finishing off leather
cord
By Eni Oken - www.oken3d.com/jewelry
There are many ways to finish off a leather cord
by gluing the cord to a hook end, however, the
method shown here is sturdy and does not
require any use of glue. This finishing might be a
little bulkier than other solutions, but from a
purist's point of view, it makes for a more
elegant piece of jewelry for not using any glue or
solder.
Step 1: Wrap the end of the leather cord
Take a length of 12 inches or more of 20
gauge wire. Fold the end of the leather cord
and make a simple wrapped loop around it
with the wire.
Step 2: Wrap the other end into a loop
and coil heavily and tightly
Wrap the other end into a rather large loop
and triple wrap the base of the loop. Pinch the
loop which holds the leather cord, to make it a
bit slimmer and continue coiling well into the
leather part. Try to fill up the areas that are
too thin to even out the wrap, by triple
wrapping them. The goal is to form a neat,
tight wrapped cone.
Trim the leather cord and the wire.

Step 3: Create the simple hook clasp
Take a length of 18 (or thicker) gauge wire of
about 4 inches and create a loose spiral at one
end. Bend the other end backwards, forming a
hook.
Step 4: Finish off the ends and flatten
Coil the very tip of the hook so it will not hurt
the wearer and then flatten the entire piece
with a chasing hammer over metal, to make it
sturdier. Attach a jump ring to the spiral part.
