full.  Prevents overfilling of drainage

bag.

1. Gather equipment. Promotes organization and effi-

ciency.

2. Wash hands. Reduces transmission of microorganisms.
3. Prepare connection between tubing and bag by cleans-

ing with betadine swab sticks. Reduces transmission of
microorganisms.

4. Allow to dry. Betadine must dry to be effective.
5. Ensure clamps on tubing between drip chamber and

bag are closed. To prevent CSF from entering tubing.

6. Open package containing new bag maintaining sterile

technique.

7. Put on sterile gloves. Reduces transmission of microor-

ganisms.

8. Remove old bag from tubing and attach new bag.
9. Dispose of old bag containing CSF in biohazard con-

tainer. Consistent with guidelines for handling bodily
fluids.

10. Remove gloves. Wash hands. Reduces transmission of

microorganisms.
