Telling the time – Podawanie godzin
Istnieją dwa sposoby podawania godzin w języku angielskim:
1) krótki: godziny i minuty podajemy jak odrębne cyfry n.p.:
9:14 = nine fourteen; 5:30 = five thirty
5:04 = five oh four; 11:01 = eleven oh one
2) długi: podobny do naszego - wykorzystujemy wyrazy:
past (=po) i to (=za,
dosłownie do
).
Używa się określeń quarter past (=kwadrans po), quarter to (za kwadrans),
half past (wpół do,
dosłownie połowa po
) oraz o'clock (oznacza równą godzinę)
n.p.: 6:00 = six o'clock; 2:15 = quarter past two; 9:45 = quarter to ten;
4:30 = half past four (NIE: five).
W języku codziennym nie używa się 24-godzinnego zegara. Zamiast tego używa się skrótów:
a.m. - oznacza godziny od północy do południa
p.m. - oznacza godziny od południa do północy
lub zwrotów:
in the morning - rano, in the afternoon - południu, in the evening - wieczorem, at night - w nocy.
