The art of making a complaint
The general feeling many people have these days is that the products they buy are low quality. Fancy electronic items offering countless features seem to break down all the time. Food tastes like plastic or has no taste at all.
(1)______ It seems that as more and more products we buy are not exactly ideal, there is one skill that is becoming increasingly useful: making complaints.
The first thing to remember when you complain about a defective product is that although you may feel angry, you cannot really show it. (2)______ In fact, it only helps them. For example, it will give them the right to call the security who will remove you from the shop.
When you describe your problem, talk about facts, not your emotions. Be ready to provide all the necessary information: the product number, date of purchase, when and how you noticed the defect. (3)______
When the process of handling your complaint takes time, try to keep track of the phone conversations you have had or emails you have received, as well as the names of employees you have contacted.
What you need is lots of patience. In big companies things take time and the person you talk to is rarely the person that makes decisions. So don't expect them to do anything right away. (4)______ If somebody tells you he can't help you, tell him that you want to talk to his boss and don't give up until it happens. Remember –
there are a number of institutions helping customers protect their rights. (5)______ If there is one thing any business wants to avoid, it is a bad reputation. After all, they want us to believe that they really care about us.
A. Yelling at the employees handling your problem will not help you one bit.
B. This, however, is only the beginning of your trouble.
C. Clothes look good until you wash them once or twice when they lose their initial shape and colour.
D. If a company seems to ignore your complaint, tell them you are going to get in touch with one of them or even take the issue to the media.
E. Not to mention keeping your receipt without which you can often do little or nothing about the situation.
F. Be assertive enough to tell them how and when you want the thing to be dealt with.
