She signaled the guards to release him. "Keep your weapons on him at all times and don't let him touch her." Anguish and despair swept over Jake like a tidal wave as he moved to Torri's side. He'd been crazy to come back here. He should have done as Col. Reed had said and left Montgomery in the past, then grabbed his one chance at happiness by returning with Torri to her own time. He would gladly leave behind his mission, his precious fight for right. He knew now that the Council would never listen to him. They were hell-bent on K'mer's destruction and he had no doubt that they would bring their own about as well. But now it was too late. "Torri," he said in a low voice that he hoped wouldn't carry to the others. "I'm sorry. You were right; I should have listened to you and gone with you." "Jake." Torri took a step toward him and T'ria hurried to her side, jerking her away from him, digging the weapon she held into Torri's back. Torri struggled, but finally stopped in defeat. She was two feet away from Sake and it was apparent that T'ria didn't intend for them to get any closer. "Never forget that I love you," she whispered. "Listen to me Victoria Cameron," he said, leaning toward her as far as the two neanderthals on either side of him would allow. "Neither time, nor space, nor even death can separate us forever. We will be together again one day." Torri gazed back at him, her heart aching at the thought of never seeing him again. She stretched her hand toward him.
