The Loneliest Moment

"And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" ... And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. And the curtain of the Temple [see Temples] was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing Him, saw that He thus breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" (Mark 15:33-34,37-39 RSV)

Why?

Of all of the recorded words spoken by Jesus Christ, His "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" as He hung on the cross at Golgatha (in the photograph) is the most unsettling for many people.

Some have contended that His words in Aramaic were merely a coincidental repetition of the same words, in Hebrew, of Psalms 22:1 that were spoken by King David centuries before. But is that all that Jesus was doing? Or, did He mean exactly what He said? And, if He did mean it literally, how or why could God ever have forsaken Him?

The Bearer Of All Sin

There are some things that most people find simply too repugnant to look at, or to have anything to do with. The same is true of God. To God, the sight of sin is absolutely repulsive.

Of Himself, Jesus Christ never sinned. He was the most perfect human being that has ever existed, or will ever exist, and He was absolutely innocent in the eyes of God. But, we must keep in mind that the entire purpose of Jesus' human life was to ultimately bear the sin, all of the sin, that has ever been committed by the billions and billions of humans that have ever lived. That, is a mind-boggling amount of sin.

Why did Jesus cry out "Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani?" as His mission reached its fulfillment and He was held personally responsible for all sin? Because, with that immense load of guilt, our guilt, upon Him, for just a very few seconds, God couldn't stand the sight of Him.
