 Our aim with the new edition has been to make every
Over the years we have met a lot of teachers around the world when we
travelled to give teacher training sessions. One of the things we ve most
enjoyed about travelling has been meeting teachers. Many of you have
been involved in the work to create the new version of English File and your
feedback has helped greatly to shape the third edition.
After reading through all the reader reports we felt we have really got to know
them. We know the kind of topics they like or dislike, what aspects of grammar

and pronunciation are important to them, even their sense of humour! For
example, we once wrote a grammar practice sentence which said  England ___
Brazil 3-0. (defeat/beat/thrash) and one reader added the comment  In your
dreams!
Our aim with the new edition has been to make every lesson better and more
teacher-friendly. We kept the bits you loved and found successful, and built
on that to bring you a new and refreshed third edition with inspiring new
topics, stimulating activities and brand new digital content.

We also believe that in 9 out of 10 cases when the student signs up for English
classes, their goal is to speak. Speaking a foreign language is very hard, so
students need a great deal of motivation to make them open their mouths.
We believe that topic is very important. A good topic is one to which students
and teachers can contribute from their own knowledge and experience. This
time we managed to get in touch with the actor Sir Ian McKellen who has
just done an interview with us for the new Elementary. It was a very exciting
moment when the email arrived saying he d agreed to do it!
English File has a reputation for getting students to speak. We believe
that one of the difficulties students face is their lack of confidence to talk
in English. Confidence comes from knowing they are using the language
correctly and that they are pronouncing it correctly. Unless you have had
plenty of opportunity to practise, you don t feel confident to speak. In English
