This design is inspired and interpreted from a temari found in the following
Japanese book: Kago Hana Temari, ISB-N-4-8377-0292-9, p. 2 #3

Wrapping  White All Purpose Sewing Thread
Division Markings 
Vertical Guidelines Only, Candlelight Metallic Gold by YLI Corp
Obi Only, Anchor #5 Pearl Cotton #410 (Blue)

DMC#5 Pearl Cotton : #3325 (Blue), #727 (Yellow), #666 (Red), #498 (Dark
Red), #367 (Green)
Anchor #5 Pearl Cotton: #10 (Coral), #410 (Blue)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Prepare the mari and mark for a simple 12 division, using Candlelight Metallic Gold
(YLI Corp) for the vertical guidelines. Mark the equator, using #410 Blue (Anchor).
Refer to the Simple 12 instructions for help with this division.
1. Mark the Kiku (Chrysanthemum) Design at the North Pole
Measure midpoints between the North Pole and obi along each guideline; mark
with pins, alternating pin head colors as shown (Figure 1).

2. Stitch the Kiku (Chrysanthemum) Design at the North Pole
Refer to the Kiku (Chrysanthemum) Design instructions for help with this stitch.
a) Round 1A  Using #3325 blue (DMC), stitch the kiku stitch as shown in Figure 2.
Guidelines with blue pins are stitched just below the blue pins. Guidelines with
orange pins are stitched close to the North Pole

b) Round 1B  Using #3325 blue (DMC) as in Step 2b, stitch the kiku stitch as
shown in Figure 3. Guidelines with orange pins are stitched just below the orange
pins. Guidelines with blue pins are stitched close to the North Pole.

c) Rounds 2  9 - Continue, as in round 1, with the remaining eight rounds (Figure
3). Complete color sequence:

Rounds 3-4, Anchor # 10 (Coral)
Rounds 5-8, DMC #666 (Red)
Round 9, DMC #498 (Dark Red)

3. Mark and Stitch
the Kiku Design
at the South Pole
Rotate the mari and
work the same Kiku
design at the South
Pole (Figure 4).
Begin each round
using the same set
of guidelines as
those used to begin
each round at the
North Pole. In
other words, if each
round began by
working stitches
near the obi at
guidelines 1, 3, 5,
7, etc. (Figure 2),
then the stitches
worked on the
opposite pole
should begin at

4. Stitch the Obi (Figure 5)
a) Wrap each side of the obi as follows:
5 wraps, Anchor #410 Blue.
1 wrap, Candlelight Metallic Gold
b) With DMC #367 Green, work pine needle stitches over wrapped obi to secure
threads
