RIGHT ANGLE WEAVE
BASIC INSTRUCTIONS
These instructions are for a four-bead unit. Think of the unit as a little square with one bead on the top and
bottom and one bead on each side.
Top
Bottom
1. Pick up 4 beads and tie into a circle. Go back through two or three beads, until you are exiting one of
the side beads.
Figure1
2. Pick up three beads and make a circle by going back through the side bead that the thread was
coming out of, i.e. if the thread is coming out of the bottom of the bead, go down through the top of
that bead. (green lines). Go through two more beads so that you are coming up out of a side bead
(black lines).
Figure 2
2. Pick up three more beads and make a circle by going back through the side bead that the thread is
coming out of in the opposite direction, i.e. if the thread is coming out of the top of the bead, go up
through the bottom of that bead. Go through two more beads so that you are coming down out of a
side bead (green lines).
Figure 3
3. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the strip is as long as you want it. Note that your thread will be moving in
a figure eight as you add each unit first counterclockwise (step 2) and then clockwise (step 3).
ADDING A SECOND ROW:
1. To add a second row, weave thread until it is coming out of the bottom bead of the last unit (red bead in
diagram.)
Figure 4
2. Pick up three beads and circle back through the red bead to make a 4 bead RAW unit. (Beads added
in second row will be green in diagram.)
Figure 5
3. Go back through the three beads (green in diagram) you just added. Your needle should be coming out
of the top of the last bead, pointing towards the row you just finished. (Green lines in Figure 5 above.)
4. For each row, the bottom bead of the previous row will become the top bead of the RAW units on
the row you are adding. To make the next RAW unit, go through the next bottom bead to the left (red
in diagram) from right to left, and then pick up two more beads (yellow beads in diagram.) Circle
back through the left side bead of the last unit you added, (blue line) then through the bottom bead of
the row above, and down through the first yellow bead you added to make this unit (green line). The
needle and thread should be pointing down away from the previous row.
Figure 6
6. Pick up two more beads (blue beads in diagram below) and circle through the next bottom bead (red)
from right to left, then down through the side bead on the previous RAW unit (black lines) and through
the two beads you just added (pink lines). Your needle and thread will be pointing up towards the first
row.
Figure 7
7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 across the row. Hint: If your needle and thread is coming out of the top of the
side bead, you will go through the next bottom bead of the previous row before picking up two beads.
If the needle and thread is coming out of the bottom of the side bead (pointing away from the
previous row), you will pick up two beads before going through the next bottom bead on the previous
row.
8. When you have completed row 2, you must get in position to start row 3. Weave your thread through
until it is coming out of the last bottom bead on row 2. Pick up three beads, and complete your first
RAW unit as in step 2 above. This time you will be working from the left side of the strip to the right
side. Always begin a row with three beads, and then complete the rest of the row by picking up two
beads. Note the direction your thread is coming out of the right side bead in this first RAW unit, and
you will know whether to pick up two beads or go through the next bottom bead before picking up
two beads. ( See Hint in step 7.)
9. Another hint: If RAW is still confusing, practice with E-beads or pony beads, using a different color
of beads when you start the next row.
