INTRODUCTION
Book tests are among the most popular effects in mentalism. But those tests, which
require the performer to use his own book, are not always suitable for impromptu or intimate
performances. The fact that the performer just happened to have a book with him would raise
suspicion in many circumstances.
I have always felt that, for impromptu work, the most logical book for a performer to
have on his person would be a pocket dictionary. But even then, a pocket dictionary is still not
something that a person would normally carry on a regular basis. (Unless, of course, he was
attempting to learn the English language.)
The Remote Viewing Testing Book not only overcomes all of these objections, but it
allows the mentalist to perform some of the most astounding effects possible in the genre. The
book, in this case, is not a novel or a dictionary. It is an official looking pocket-sized document
that the mentalist claims is used to calculate random targets in remote viewing experiments. In
a sense, then, the effect is not really a book test at all for the book is merely used to select a
target location, which the performer will attempt to describe via his remote viewing abilities.
This may well be one of the most unusual e-Books you have ever read. In addition to a
description of the routines possible with The Remote Viewing Testing Book, it also includes
document files which will allow you to print the necessary book on your computer or, if you
wish, you can copy the necessary files to disk and take them to your local printer for printing,
trimming (if necessary) and binding.
The Effects:
The book is specially designed to allow you to perform four different experiments in
remote viewing
1) The routine described in detail in my book Extremely Remote which uses an
 invisible die to select a location;
2) Two matrix force variations which allow you to force one of two particular locations in
an extremely fair looking manner;
3) An application of Royal Heath s die-cipering dice principle that allows you know
what the target will be before the participants have even looked it up, and
4) Impossible Vision , the routine that required me to create the Remote Viewing
Testing Book. In the first place. I honestly believe it is one of the most impossible
looking effects in mentalism.
I ll describe Impossible Vision first as it will give you a good idea of how the RV
testing book operates.
Impossible Vision
Effect: The mentalist discusses remote viewing and offers to perform an actual
test based on the procedures used by a remote viewing facility with which he is associated. He
shows his audience the target selection book used by the facility and explains as follows:
This book is used to randomly select targets for a remote viewing experiment.
By targets , I mean physical locations, which the individual being tested will attempt to
describe. In this book are over two hundred and fifty locations throughout the United
States.
You will notice that in the front and back of the book are sections containing
maps. There are thirty-eight different maps, which cover all of the possible locations.
The actual locations are not necessarily printed on the maps the maps are there just
to show the general geographical locations of the targets.
In the middle part of the book are the target listings. You will note that each
target is numbered and that under the target name is a reference to the map, which
covers the general area surrounding the target.
And, finally, in the beginning of the book, there is a series of seventeen pages of
random number generations. Random numbers are printed all over these pages. At the
beginning of a test, one of the numbers is selected by an individual who has no idea
what target may be associated with what number.
As he explains the sections of the book, the mentalist shows the applicable sections to
various audience members.
[If you haven t done so already, now would be a good time to look at the .doc or .pdf file so you
can see for yourself what the book looks like.}
The mentalist asks for two participants to randomly select a target. He hands the book
to one of them and then moves well away from both of them while the target selection is made.
The participant holding the book is asked to open it to the section of random number pages.
As I showed you before, each of those pages contains a series of random four-
digit numbers.
Turn to anyone of those pages and point to any number. Show the number to [name of
the other participant]. Do not call out the number or even whisper it. Just point to it.
Addressing the other volunteer, the performer says,
Can you see the number he is pointing to? Good. Don t say the number aloud. I
would like you to take the book now and stand back a bit so that no one but you can see
what the actual target will be.
In the center of the book is a numbered list of all of the targets. Please look up
the target. When you have found it, put your finger on it and show it to [the first
spectator s name}. Again, do not say anything out loud.
After the first spectator notes the location, the performer tells him to remember the
number of the map that appears under the location.
I would like you to take the book back now and find the map upon which the
target appears. When you have found it, show it to your partner and I would like both of
you to imagine that you see the target location somewhere on the map. The name of the
target may not actually appear on the map, but imagine that you see it there.
After he has found the map and they are both looking at it, the mentalist says,
Now I will try to visualize myself at the actual target location. I only need to know
one thing from you, and one thing only. Am I looking for a target that is man made, like
a building, a monument or other type of structure, or am I looking for something created
by Nature?
Good, close the book now and just concentrate on the location. Pretend that you
are both there.
The performer retrieves the book, points out to the rest of the audience that the two
participants could be thinking of any one of hundreds of location, and puts the book back into
his pocket. Without asking the spectators anything else, the performer describes a location. He
starts out generally and then gets increasingly specific. Finally, he picks up a piece of paper
and writes something down. He folds the paper once and hands it to a third spectator for
safekeeping. Addressing the two participants he says,
And now, for the first time, I would like you to tell everyone what the target
location was.
They announce the target and it is immediately apparent that the performer s description was
quite accurate. The spectator holding the paper is asked to open it and read aloud what the
mentalist had written.
It is the exact name of the target location.
Method
If you read the description of the effect over again, you will see why I have named this
 Impossible
Vision. There seems to be no explanation other than remote viewing (or perhaps telepathy).
The description accurately describes what the audience sees a location is freely selected
from a book containing hundreds of locations. The number of locations in the book can be
verified by letting the audience look through the book for themselves at the beginning of the
routine. Without saying anything to the performer, two spectators select a number at random
and then a location.
All the performer asks, after they have found a location, is whether the target is man-
made or natural. But as soon as he gets the answer, he knows exactly what the target is!
The method is based on two elements. The first is that the book is printed on card stock
and is tightly bound (stapled). Thus, it has a natural tendency to spring shut. The spectators
have to hold it open while they are looking at it. This is what makes the second, and major,
aspect of the method infallible.
The performer needs only to watch the spectators while the selection is made and he
will be able to narrow the target down to two selections- one man-made and the other natural.
Despite the fact that over two hundred locations actually appear in the book, it is only possible
(in this routine) for the spectators to select one of thirty-two locations. Thanks to the
construction of the book (which took nearly forever!) and the actions of the spectators in finding
the target, those thirty- possibilities are rapidly reduced to just two. (Additionally, the
performer need not memorize what the possible locations are because the book itself
will tell him!)
The spectators take turns looking up things in the book and then pointing them out to
each other.
The first selection made is a random four-digit number from among the sixteen pages of
random numbers, which appear at the beginning of the book. These begin at page 7 of the
book .If you want, you can bookmark this before giving the book to the participants.
Look at the .doc or .pdf file and you will notice that while each page appears to be
covered with different numbers, there are actually only thirty-two numbers visible on
each two-page spread. They are the same numbers that are visible on the other pages,
but on each page, their position has been altered. Due to the manner in which the pages
have been prepared, it looks as if a choice is being made from among hundreds of
possibilities.
Here is what just one of these pages looks like:
Note that all of the numbers appearing on left hand pages are odd, and all of the
numbers appearing on right hand pages are even. (Disregard, for now, the cover page of the
number section, which contains a table of three digit numbers. It plays no part in this effect. I ll
explain in a bit what it is for, as well as the meaning of the strange table on the title page.) Just
remember that the performer makes it clear that a number is to be chosen from among the
sixteen random series that are found between pages 7 and 22.
As soon as the first spectator points out a number to the second, you will have
immediately cut the number of possibilities in half. Because of the natural stiffness of the book,
the spectator will have to hold it with both hands while pointing out the number to his partner. It
is easy, even from across the room, to see whether he is pointing to the left or right hand page.
All you have to remember is Left or Right . Let us suppose, in this example, that he
has pointed to number 2624. Since all of the even numbers are on right hand pages, you will
see that he is pointing at the right hand page. Remember RIGHT.
[IMPORTANT- Right or Left is from the point of view of the spectator. In this case,
he is pointing to the page on his right]
That s step one. There are only three more and they are just as simple.
Next the second spectator takes the book and looks up the target (In the large middle
section of the book that contains the target names and map numbers. When he finds the
target, he is asked to point it out to the first spectator. Since location number 2624 appears on
page 73 of the book, he will be pointing at the right hand page. Again, remember RIGHT. (So
now, you are holding on to the thought right-right ) (The page numbers themselves
have nothing to do with the operation of the book. The fact that 3218, an even number,
appears on page 73 is irrelevant. All that is important is that the spectator is pointing to the
right hand page.)
Next, he asks the first spectator to remember the map number that appears under the
name of the target.
Here is a copy of the page at which they are looking at this stage:
He is looking at Area 51 , Nevada. As you can see, underneath the target name are the
words, map 8 front of book
You showed them earlier that there were two sections of maps one in the front of the
book and one in the back so this instruction will be clear to them. When you ask him to look
up the appropriate map, he will open the book near the FRONT.
That s the third thing you remember. So know you are holding on to this thought -
 RIGHT-RIGHT-FRONT .
The next step is for the first spectator to point out the map to his partner.
(The reason you have the spectators step back from each other while they make there respective
selections is, allegedly, to insure that they don t confuse the performer with conflicting thoughts. In fact,
the reason is to provide a rationale for one spectator to point out the proper item to the other. After you
have done the routine a few times, though, you will find that the stiffness of the book will make it obvious
which side of the book they are looking at without even asking them to point. Just watch their eyes and
you will know where they are looking.)
As you may have guessed, the maps appear on both right and left hand pages. And that
is what you look for next are they looking at a map on the right or the left? Returning to the
present example, map # 8 is in the FRONT of the book on the RIGHT page.
You are now holding on to the thought RIGHT-RIGHT-FRONT-RIGHT.
You have now narrowed the possible targets to just two.
You don t necessarily know what they are yet. (Unless you have memorized the entire book,
which is NOT necessary.) One of those targets is natural and one is man made. In this
example, when the performer asks which it is, they will likely say man-made.
(If they look confused, don t worry about it. In just a second, you will know exactly what the two
possibilities are and you will see for yourself what might have confused them. If necessary, a
brief pump, such as (in this case) I get something about space ships or something like that.
Does that make any sense to you at all?)
You are now holding on to your final thought, which is:
 RIGHT-RIGHT-FRONT-RIGHT MAN-MADE .
Think of this as the letters: R R F R M
Now ask for the book back. Before you put it back in your pocket, briefly flip through the
pages for some people near the front, emphasizing the impossibility of anyone knowing what
the target could actually be, for As you can see, there are hundreds of possibilities in the
target book, and only the two of them know what the target is.
As you close the book, take a brief look at the strange chart that appears on the very
first page of the book. It will tell you what the location is immediately. (It will also tell you what
the Natural alternative possibility is. Here is the chart. (For now, just agree with me that it is
strange.)
The chart comes under a heading, which says Associative Remote Viewing Calculator ARV
0301. That can mean whatever you want it to as far as the spectators are concerned (should
anyone ask.) It is really a crib sheet with the clues you need for three different effects, which
can be performed with the book.
Ignore the column that goes down the center of the chart the one with the letters AONCE in
the center of the top down. The purpose of the bold letters in the chart is to help you visually
divide things up. You are looking for the sequence R R F R M. Since the sequence starts with
RIGHT, I have conveniently put the right sequences on the right of the chart. The bold letter
R in the top row marks the top of the column containing the R sequences. The top half of the
column contains the sequences beginning with RR and the bottom half of the column contains
the sequences beginning with R L. Conversely; you will find the sequences beginning with LL
on the top of the left column, and those beginning with LR on the bottom half. Thus, before you
even take a glance at the chart, you will immediately know which area to look at. (You can, of
course, make up any sort of cheat sheet you like, but this is the one that works well for me.)
Look down the right hand column for your sequence R R F R M. It is the fourth one
down. Look at the letters that follow the sequence. They are: A R E A F, which stands for
Area Fifty-one ! Just above it, you will see the sequence R R F R N, which is what you would
look at if they said Natural instead of man-made.
Take the time to examine the chart carefully and compare the following list of possible
selections to what you find on it. (I ll explain the numbers on the left and the purpose of the
middle column of the chart when I describe the other effects possible with the book.)

From here on you will be able, by carefully examining the book and rereading the above
description, to discover how and why the book works and how the abbreviations in the chart
serve as reminders for the names on the list. All of the locations are major national landmarks
and you will add greatly to your presentation by reading up a little on the ones you may not be
familiar with.
I stated in the beginning that the book could also be used for to matrix, or magic
square type forces.
You are probably already familiar with the force, which has appeared before in many
variations, in which three spectators are each given three index cards. Each of their cards
contains a different single digit number. For those who don t recall the force, here it is briefly:
You first show that each of the nine cards has one of the digits from one to nine written
upon it.
(Or you can write them on blank cards as you explain.) The cards are arranged in the
following order from the top down: 8 t 6 3 5 7 4 9 2. False mix the cards and give three to each
spectator. The first gets the cards 8 1 6, the second gets the numbers 3 5 6, .the third gets the
numbers 4 9 2.
Ask one of the spectators to call out any one of his digits. Write that digit on a large pad
and state that it will form the first figure of a randomly formed three-digit number. Tell him to
toss the card bearing that number aside, and to keep the other two. Ask another spectator to
call out one of his numbers. Write that one down to the right of the first. Tell him, to toss the
card he just name aside, as well. Finally, have the third spectator call out one of his three digits
and to toss it aside.
So far, all is fair. You have obtained a random three-digit number.
But now you point out to the first spectator that he has two number cards left in his hand.
Would he please call out one of them? The mentalist writes this number down underneath the
left hand digit of the three digit number he wrote previously. And so the process is repeated
with each spectator calling out one of their two remaining numbers and tossing these aside
once they ve called them. There are now two 3-digit numbers, one underneath each other, on
the pad.
Each spectator has one card left. The performer points out that know one could have
known before-hand what the sequence of theses randomly formed numbers could have been.
You each have one number left. We will use them to form a third random three-digit number
and then we shall add them all together.
Since the cards given to each of the spectators at the outset were in sets of three which
each totaled fifteen, it is a sure thing that the total will be 1665.
In the remote viewing book, the target location at 1665 is the Statue of Liberty. You can
write about visiting the statue in a dream if you like and seal your notes into an envelope,
which you hand out at the beginning of the routine. After the random number is obtained,
have someone look up the target in the book and then compare it with what they find in the
sealed envelope.
A more subtle version of the force is this: After the three spectators have been given
numbers, ask someone else in the audience to point to one volunteer who they wish to see
eliminated. Whoever is pointed to be told to tear his cards up and return to his seat. No one
could have known beforehand, says the mentalist, which of the three would be eliminated
and which three numbers, therefore, would be eliminated from consideration.
The performer now proceeds to obtain three random TWO-digit numbers from the
remaining two spectators. Again, since the numbers each has been given total fifteen, the final
total will be 165.
Target number 165 in the book is The Chrysler Building, NY .
Those of you who have read my Extremely Remote will note that the book is also set
to perform that effect. By rolling his invisible die three times as described in that book and then
looking up the target represented by the three different single numbers thrown, he can only
arrive at one of the following targets. Here is the list, in alphabetical order:
Aon Center, Chicago, IL
Bank of America Center, Seattle, WA
Chrysler Building, New York, NY
Dataflux Tower, Monterrey, Mexico
Embarcadero Center, San Francisco, CA
Four Seasons Hotel, New York, NY
Gulf Tower, Pittsburgh, PA
Hyatt Regency, New York, NY
Imperial Plaza, Honolulu, HI
Justice Center, Cleveland, OH
Key Tower, Cleveland, OH
Library Tower, Los Angeles, CA
Millennium Place, Boston, MA
NASA Museum, Cape Canaveral, FL
Olympic Tower, New York, NY
Prudential Tower, Boston, MA
Raymond Commerce Building, Newark, NJ
Sears Tower, Chicago, IL
Tenneco Building, Houston, TX
United Nations Secretariat Building, New York, NY
Wells Fargo Plaza, Houston, TX
The cue sheet for this sequence is the center column of the chart appearing on the first
page of the book, starting with AO N C, which stands for Aon Center.
Finally, here is the purpose of the first page of the number sequence section of the book
the one that looks like this:
In this variation, which I think you will like very much, the target number is selected by
passing the book, opened to this page, to five different spectators. The first is asked to call out
any number from the first column. The second to call out any number from the second column,
the third from the third column, and so on.
The performer points out that each spectator has a choice of six different numbers to
choose from and that the total of possible combinations that can be called is actually 7776.
The numbers called out are written down by another spectator, who is asked to total
them up. Since these are the numbers that appear on Royal Heath s Die-Cyphering dice,
there are actually only thirty-seven possible totals. The performer will know the answer before
the numbers are added simply by adding together the last digit of each number called. The
result will be a two-digit number representing the last two digits of the target number. The first
two digits are the difference between the two-digit number and fifty.
For example, suppose that the spectators chose the following numbers, one from each
column. As you read them, just mentally add the last digits of each number.
483, 147, 657, 267, 971
The total of the last digits 3, 7, 7, 7 and 1 is twenty-five. The first two digits of the final
four-digit target number are the difference between twenty-five and fifty. Thus, the final total
will be 2525.
The beauty of the way in which the Heath principle works with the remote viewing test,
is that you DON T HAVE TO FIGURE OUT THE FIRST TWO DIGITS. Sure, it is not hard to do
so, but why distract yourself with too much mental work. Just remember the two-digit total of
the last digits of the five numbers selected, in this case 25.
Take a look at the cue sheet again and find the two boldface columns of numbers. Even
numbers are in the right column (of course) and odd numbers are on the left. Just to the left of
the number25 you will see the letters L I T B I. That stands for Little Big Horn which is target
number 2525 as shown on the sample target page above.
So there you have the basics of the other routines that can be performed with my
Remote Viewing Book. It was a difficult project to put together, but I have gotten a good deal of
satisfaction out of the resulting effects. I am sure that you will too.
You will require the following materials to put the book together by yourself: a printer; a
package of 100 4 x 6 blank index cards; some colored index card stock for the cover; a heavy-
duty stapler (or whatever else you want to use to bind the pages together); and some colored
decorative tape which will be used to cover the staples and give the finished book an attractive
and official appearance.
The documents you will use to create the book are in the following files included with
this e-Book:
rvtestingbook.doc
rvtestingbook.pdf
These were prepared and formatted in Word 2000. The page size is set at 4 inches by 6
inches. It is very important that you print the pages exactly as they appear and in the manner I
will explain shortly
If you do not have Word on your computer, you can use the .pdf file to create your book.
In this case, you may have to print on 8.5 by 11 index card stock, which you can cut to the
proper size after you have printed the book. Again, though, it is very important that the finished
book be paginated and laid out exactly as it is in the doc and pdf files. If you change things
around and accidently start a section on the left hand page rather than the right, for example,
the Left, Right, Back, Front method simply will not work.
And finally, here is a list of values you should note if you decide to use the Heath dice to make
the selection. They are not include in the cheat sheet because they are not among the target
numbers which can be selected in the forcing section of the book.
For the sake of completeness I should mention that it is a good idea, despite the cheat sheet,
to memorize the target names and their numerical values. The cheat sheet is intended
primarily for use in determining Left Right Front and Natural/Man-made combinations.
