REPORTED SPEECH (3)

The reporting verbs say, ask and tell can be used for different purposes:

Commands

He told me to be quiet. Tell + person + to

The teacher asked me to do my homework. Ask + person + to

I was asked to close the door. (passive)

Statements

He told us that he was famous. Tell + person (+ that)

He said that he like chips. Say (+that)

He didn't say if/whether he liked the party. Say + if/whether

The boss couldn't say why we had been fired. (He didn't know) Say + what/where/why/who

Requests

He asked me to help him with the job. Ask + person + to

Questions

The policeman asked me if/whether I was lost. Ask + person + if/whether

He asked about the price of the car. Ask + about

They asked why I had cheated in the exam. Ask + why/where/when/how

Practice 1

Write ask, tell or say in each gap. Sometimes it may be possible to use more than one option:
