Caroline and Paul keep many pets at home. They love animals and so do their parents. Caroline always watches the programme about pets on TV. Last week she saw special dogs' training exercises and she made up her mind to start teaching her dog Jonathan some useful things. She started with some easy tricks and found out that that Jonathan was really a good pupil. So she went on with some more complicated tasks and came to the conclusion that Jonathan was very clever indeed. Paul thought there was nothing unusual about Jonathan because he didn't know anything about his exceptional abilities. Yesterday Paul went into Caroline's room and what he saw made him utter a cry of surprise. Caroline and Jonathan were sitting at a small table facing each other. There was a chessboard between. They were playing chess. There was no doubt about it. Paul looked at them filled with admiration. He has never learned to play chess himself. He found it too difficult. He said that Jonathan was absolutely brilliant. Jonathan understood his words and started wagging his tail. But Caroline was not satisfied at all. She said that he was not all that clever because he lost the game again.

When he was a child Kevin played basketball every night until midnight at the park. However, Kevin's parents didn't help him to play basketball. Kevin didn't have a basket at the front of his house. His mother wanted him to study more and go to college. Lots of people came to high school basketball games to watch Kevin. Little kids asked him for his autograph. Nike invited him to basketball camps in Indiana, Oregon and Illinois. However, Kevin wasn't arrogant and he was never selfish on court. He passed the ball to other players. Sometimes his coach was angry because he passed to players who weren't very good. He was 19 when the Minnesota Timberwolves gave him a three-year, $5.6 million contract. Not many basketball players go straight from school into the NBA. When he is with his friends Kevin is funny and always joking. But he is strict with himself when he is playing basketball. He always thinks that he can play better. When he is not playing basketball Kevin listens to CDs, plays video games and watches basketball on TV. He changes his telephone number often so fans can't find him.
Kevin lives with his younger sister and his friend Peter. When his mother was at work Kevin looked after his younger sister. Kevin and Peter have been friends since they were about 11 years old.

Rivaldo says he will never forget his past. He grew up in a poor neighbourhood. Many of the children in poor neighbourhoods in Brazil have to work and they can't read or write. When Rivaldo was growing up, he sold sandwiches and drinks to tourists on the beaches. He started playing football on the rubbish sites near his house. The first team he played with was his local team, Santa Cruz. He had no money so sometimes he had to walk up to twenty five kilometers to train with them. When he became a successful footballer, he was able to give money to his family. Rivaldo's parents were the most influential people in his life. His father died in a traffic accident when Rivaldo was sixteen years old. Rivaldo was about to become successful with the football team Sao Paulo. He was very excited. However, when his father died, he wanted to give up. His mother told him to continue and make his father proud of him. Some years later at an important football match Rivaldo scored a beautiful goal, lifted the Brazilian shirt and showed another shirt underneath with a big picture of his father and a message “ For you, Dad”. Rivaldo believes that his father is watching him from heaven. His mother sometimes visits him in Barcelona. However, she doesn't want to live there because it is too cold! Two years ago, Rivaldo decided to help people in Brazil. He started the Rivaldo Foundation. He gives money to the foundation. One Christmas, Rivaldo sent 1000 bags of food to an area of Recife, where he was born.

Mariah Carey was born on March 27th 1970 in Long Island, New York. Her parents, Alfred and Patricia Carey divorced when she was three years old. They divorced partly because of racism against them- Alfred is Venezuelan and African-American, Patricia is Irish-American.
Mariah began to sing at the age of three. She could sing very well. This wasn't surprising because her mother was an opera singer.
Mariah was not a very good student at school. When she was at high school she sang for her brother's band. They borrowed a recording studio so they had to go there very early in the morning. Because of this, Mariah often missed school and the other students called her “Mirage”*. A few days after leaving high school, Mariah moved to New York City. She did lots of different jobs. She was a waitress but more than twenty restaurants fired her because of her bad work. Fortunately Mariah didn't continue waitressing for long. One evening she went to a party where she gave a tape of her songs to Tommy Mottola, the President of Sony Music Entertainment. He loved her music and she signed a contract with Sony Music in 1988. Tommy and Mariah fell in love and got married. In 1998 Mariah and Tommy got divorced but Mariah's music career didn't end. She is the only artist to have had a number 1 single for every year of the 1990s.
Mariah loves animals and she spends some of her spare time doing charity work to save dolphins. In 1995 she donated $1 million to a New York camp that provides summer holidays for city kids who are very poor. The camp is now called Camp Mariah.
In the future Mariah plans to try different things. She has already started a movie career and her next film is about a successful singer.

In AD 43 there were a lot of kings and queens all over Britain. The Roman emperor, Claudius, wanted to be emperor of all Britain. His Roman soldiers came to Britain to take the country from the British kings and queens. In the east of England there was a young queen called Boudicca. The Roman soldiers were afraid of her husband because he was a good soldier. But her husband died, and the Roman soldiers came into Boudicca's town. They wanted to take things from the people. Boudicca was very angry. In front of all her people they took off her dress, and hit her and her children many times.then they laughed and went away. That night, Boudicca, and hundreds of her people, killed hundreds of Roman soldiers, and women and children too. They burned the Roman city of London.
`I'm going to kill all the Romans!' Boudicca said. `I'm going to be Queen of all Britain now!'. But more and more Roman soldiers came to Britain- thousands and thousands of them. Boudicca's men began to run away. Six months later, Bouducca died. Boudicca wanted to be Queen of all Britain, but the Romans were too strong. But we remember her because she was the first famous British queen. Today you can see her, abig, tall, beautiful woman,in Hyde Park Corner, in the middle of London.
