Hobbies, sports and games
Everyone does have some hobby or does some sport. Only very lazy people haven't got hobbies. Now what does the word hobby mean? For me this word means an activity. Doing some sport is useful for our health. We will be stronger and we will be less ill.
There are a lot of differences between young people's hobbies and old people's hobbies. I'd like to start with my or my generation's hobbies. A lot of my friends do some kind of sport. In this age we have a lot of possibilities we can choose to do. Indoor sports, like ballgames, swimming, wrestling, weight lifting, boxing, aerobics, gymnastics, hockey etc. But there is a little disadvantage. If you want to do this sport regularly you have to enter some sport club and pay fees and the equipment isn't usually very cheap. On the other hand there are outdoor sports. For example skiing, cycling, jogging, athletics, golf, hiking, climbing, canoeing. You are on the fresh air; the sun is shining, what would you do when it is rainy? The best way is to have more hobbies and change them. Our generation play also a lot of games. I don't mean only computer games; I mean desk games like Scrabble or fantasy games like Dragon's Den. I have hobbies from every category, I play floorball, play the guitar, and I also like computer games and all kind of desk and round games.
But now have a look at the hobbies of older people. They aren't too active and find hobbies, which aren't very energy intensive. Old people do mostly gardening or fishing. If you mean that it is easy to work in the garden, you aren't right. A good gardener must carry heavy things like a spade, watering can, sickle or hoe. They must kneel on sometimes wet and dirty ground under the hot sun and that isn't easy. And the award? Home-grown vegetables and fruits. So why do people do this, because this fruit is the best and the tastiest. The second typical hobby is fishing. Especially old men are silent madmen, fishermen. They are able to spend the whole day sitting on the bank and waiting for their catch.
An other favourite hobby is collecting anything, what could be collected: stamps, money, postcards, insects, key fobs, bottles, and signatures of famous persons. I am collecting key fobs. I have about 200 key fobs, from each part of world. Some collections could be very precious and expensive. Some people are making from their own house a museum and share their collection with others, like people in our text book. That's all to these categories.
Some kind of sports must be done by people with excellent physical and psychical dispositions. These sports are called extreme or adrenaline sports. To this category belong dangerous sports: bungee-jumping, sky-diving, skiing, which starts with jumping from the helicopter etc. There are many other dangerous sports during them you are risking your life.
People do different hobbies in each season of the year, because in summer it is sunny weather. So they want to go outside and do for example cycling or swimming. In the winter people do skiing, skating or play snow wars. They start finding skis, skates, sledges and also winter clothes and go away to the mountains. The same situation comes when the snow is completely melted. People put away winter equipment and find bicycles or start hiking. It is only your choice, what sport you will do. P.E. lesson may help you. We play a lot of kinds of sports during our P.E. Attending P.E. lessons is a good start, if you haven't got any hobby.
Now something about typical American and English sports. Typical English sports have a long history and they spread into whole world. For example golf, it is sports, which are played by millionaires in the whole world. Here are some other English sports: polo, horse racing or cricket. I think that a typical American sport is basketball. But popular sports are also American football, hockey or soccer.
Last thing, I want to tell you are my main hobbies. I have been playing floorball for 4 years. I have been playing the guitar for 2 years. I have a small collection of key fobs.
