María and Carl were just married. Their families had not met until the wedding ceremony. At the reception following the wedding, the relatives of the bride and groom introduced themselves to each other. Use the clues on the cards to fill out the chart of some of the relatives who attended the nuptials.
Suggestion: 1) Introduce or review the various terms for relatives. 2) Model on the board filling in a similar chart on a smaller scale, e.g. mom, dad, son, daughter. 3) Use this activity to reinforce the lesson: Cut up pages 2 and 3 of this document into individual cards. Break the class up into groups of 3-5 students. Give each group 1 copy of the chart and 1 set of cards. (You may want to give each student in the group some of the cards to avoid stronger group members from taking over and filling in the chart by themselves.) If the students seem overwhelmed by the task, suggest they start with the clues that have María's and Carl's names on them. Encourage students to discuss the clues on their cards and work together to fill in the chart. The group which first correctly fills in their chart “wins”.
