THE MYSTERY OF STONEHENGE
Stonehenge is one of the most remarkable buildings in Britain. Stonehenge was completedX about 3,500 years ago. It was not used1 as a house, but it was clearly a very important building. The circle of big, standing stones were cut from local stone, but the smaller stones were carried2 from hundreds of miles away. Hundreds of people were used3 to collect the smaller stones. Then they had to dig big holes in the ground. The big stones were put4 into these holes. After that, the horizontal stones were lifted5 up and put on the standing stones.
Why was Stonehenge built6? What was it used for? Many different ideas have been suggested7 by scientists. Some people think that Stonehenge was a religious building. They say that young men and women were killed8 at Stonehenge as presents for the God of the Sun. Other people think that Stonehenge was a calendar. On the first day of Spring, the Sun can be seen9 rising between the two biggest stones.
Every year, Stonehenge is visited10 by thousands of tourists, but nobody knows the secret of Stonehenge.
