READING SKILLS
1 Read the interview with a politician. Tick true and cross false.
The truth about Truth and Freedom The elections are getting closer and a lot of people are thinking of voting for a new party, Truth and Freedom. They won't win the election but they might win a lot of votes. Most people don't know much about it, or its leader, Sir Jeffrey Collins, so last week I went to their party offices to ask a few questions. Sir Jeffrey was friendly at first but, as you can see from the interview below, he brought the interview to a sudden end when I asked him about his past. MARK DAVIES: Sir Jeffrey, thank you for letting me talk to you. This is your first election since you set up the Truth and Freedom party two years ago. Why did you do that and how exactly is it different to the more traditional parties? SIR JEFFREY: Well, the name should tell you that. Our country isn't free and our leaders don't tell the truth. I feel that we need both. A lot of people may be surprised to find out that they aren't free. Can you explain? Of course. We think we are free but there are many laws that take away that freedom. Are we free to drive at 150kilometres per hour? No. Are we free to say what we want? No. Are we free to smoke where we want? No. But we need some laws. Where do you stop? Would you give people the freedom to kill? No, of course not. Yes, we need some laws but we've got far too many. If we get into power, we will remove these stupid, unnecessary laws. It will make life much easier for everyone. Now, can I ask you about yourself, Sir Jeffrey? You were a soldier and a businessman. I remember reading a few years ago that you were in trouble with the police. Can you tell us about that? I've got nothing to say about that. I read that you earned Ł2 million selling chemicals that you knew were dangerous and that five people died. Right. I'm not going to stay here any longer listening to this. The interview is over. And that was the end of the interview. You can decide for yourself whether Sir Jeffrey is the sort of person you want to be the leader of the country. By Mark Davies |
