Another tale from under the water
It was in December 1993 that we did our first dive at a spot southwest of Acapulco in Mexico. The submersible that took us on our exciting and mysterious journey was called Alvin. It took us over an hour to sink through the cold dark waters of the Pacific before we reached the sea floor at more than 8000 metres below the surface. We'd come to explore a recently formed hydrothermal vent. (1) _____ to spend a weekend!
We touched the bottom and peered out though our tiny window, and (2) _____ we saw. It was (3) _____ we could hardly believe our eyes. Huge numbers of giant tube worms waved around in front of us. They were (4) _____ we had difficulty seeing the top of them. They can grow to over four feet, and they grow incredibly fast. The last time we'd come here there had been none of these around. Besides the giant worms there were mussels, shrimp, crabs and lots of other kinds of worms. (5) _____. The sea was so thick with all these creatures (6) ______we had to move very slowly through them. But that didn't stop us doing something we really didn't want to do. There was (7) _____ of animals outside our window that we couldn't steer Alvin properly. We suddenly hit one of the hydrothermal vents and had to watch it fall apart before our eyes. It was an (8) _____ creation of nature and we had destroyed it. We felt terrible. It was (9) _____ awful thing to do. The good news is that when we went back three months later, the chimney had already grown back 20 feet. We realised then that the vents grew as fast as the worms. That (10) _____ surprised us.
