“One True Thing” is a movie by Carl Franklin, based on the novel of the same name by Anna Quindlen. It tells the story of a woman required to take on the responsibility of looking after a sick parent and, in so doing, provides a rare insight into today's relationships between adults and aging parents. It touches on the subject of the lack of understanding that children have about the kind of people their parents truly are.
Upon returning to hometown, Ellen (Rene Zellweger) finds that she cannot cope either with the slow pace of life there or with her parents. Meryl Streep gives a brilliant, potentially Oscar-winning performance as Kate, the ailing mother. She portrays a woman whose life revolves around holiday decorating and preparations, and making the holidays fun.
At the beginning of the movie, Ellen looks down on her parents. A modern career woman, she finds her mother's life shallow and meaningless and is greatly critical of her. She also finds her father, a college professor played by William Hurt, distant and indifferent towards his family. She resents his interest in his work at the expense of his wife. As the plot unfolds, however, Ellen comes to know and respect her parents and is surprised to discover that they have an understanding of life she had never suspected.
Carl Franklin - better known for directing crime stories - proves to be a talented and versatile director as he skillfully succeeds in creating warm, heart-rending scenes throughout the movie.
