Reading
9 Match the headings in the box to the correct paragraphs. There are two extra headings.
What is time management? Your work environment Take time out Setting goals Prioritising Thinking or doing? Coping with stress Analysing your time
Managing your time effectively
(0) What is time management?
There are only 24 hours in the day and yet there is so much to do. How can you fit it all in? The answer is to organise your time so that you can do what you need to and still have a bit of time for yourself at the end.
(1) ______________________
The first step is to look at what you do at the moment. Are you making the most of your time? A good way to do this is to make a list of all the things you do, or think you have to do. How much time do you spend on each one? Is it enough or too much? People are often surprised when they actually see how much time they spend on certain things.
(2) ______________________
Next, you need to decide on the amount of time you can spend doing each thing. Here, it is important to be realistic. You have to decide how much you can really manage to do in twenty-four hours each day. Planning and making lists are part of this stage as it helps make things clear.
(3) ______________________
Once you have your list you need to decide which things are the most important. It's quite easy to spend too much time on small things which really aren't necessary and which take up valuable time.
(4) ______________________
It's also important not to spend too much time making decisions. Of course, you don't want to make the wrong decision, but if you aren't careful you'll end up doing absolutely nothing, just thinking about what you have to do.
(5) ______________________
Finally, try not to get distracted. Look at where you work and what you have to do. One problem that often occurs in office cultures is that it is too easy to spend time discussing things with colleagues rather than focussing on your own work. On the other hand, for people who work at home it's easy to do things like make yourself a coffee, check if the mail has arrived etc and not get down to work.
