ABAP Dictionary Delta Changes

3.x - 4.0

In previous versions of SAP, ABAP was known as ABAP/4. All tools that have the term “ABAP” currently, used to have “ABAP/4” instead.

The ABAP Workbench was known as the ABAP/4 Development Workbench in past releases. Also, the Repository Browser was known as the Object Browser. These are just terminology changes.

Table, data element, and domain names were limited to 10 characters in previous releases. Many object names were shorter in the 3.x versions.

Fields were also limited to 10 characters in the 3.x versions.

The option to view foreign key relationships graphically is not available in previous releases.

The ability to turn off an index in its definition is new in version 4.x. Previously, the only possible way to disable an index was with Native SQL.

The menu path for the Repository Information System used to be labeled Tools * ABAP Workbench * Overview * Repository Infosys. in previous releases instead of the current Tools * ABAP Workbench * Overview * Information System.

New and Old options under the Repository Information System - The Object Modeling option under Modeling is new in 4.x. Also, Customer Enhancements used to be under Environment in 3.x.

Buffering of views (only for the database view though) is new in 4.x.

In previous releases, Help Views used to play a major role in matchcodes. However, matchcodes have been replaced by Search Helps, and therefore, Help Views no longer have as big a presence.

Search helps replace the functionality of matchcodes in the previous releases of SAP R/3 (see appendices 2 and 3 for more information on matchcodes).

Since matchcodes used to be used instead of Search Helps, matchcodes were the first line of F4 help offered to the user.

4.0 to 4.6

The Repository Browser is now referred to as the Object Navigator

Technical attributes can now be assigned directly to a field in a table instead of using the two level domain concept.
