TEACHER'S NOTES:

MIRROR GAME - GAME 1

(students use: is going to be, will be, wants to be, hopes to be, would like to be, might become, decided to study to be, will probably become..., will surely work like... )

Student A (Mark): Oh, I am going to be a pilot!

Student B: He is going to travel a lot. He is going to have a high salary. He is going to work in a plane.

Student C (protesting opponent): But Mark HATES flying !!!

Student D: Wow, I might become a teacher!

Student E: She might become a teacher. She might work with kids. She might teach and help.

Student F: But student_D DOESN'T LIKE children !!!

GAME 2 - frequency adverbs game - choose a dream job, students ask “how often” questions
Student1: How often do you....... work with a computer? Teacher: NEVER!

Students repeat - shout out: Aha, Miss Anna never works with PC. (3rd person Pr.Simple + adverbs revision)
always - every day - very often - frequently - usually - often - quite often - normally - regularly - sometimes - occasionally - from time to time - not very often - seldom - rarely - never

GAME 3 - My Secret - The Other You

Tell the students that you will ask some questions and that you want them to answer by pretending to be the sort of person (profession, employee) they would like to be. Give the students a minute to imagine the kind of person they would like to be. They can do this seriously or humorously. You then ask the questions, but students should give their answers to their partner. (Ex: Are you a man or a woman? What job do you do? What makes you happy? Do you get up early? Do you work indoors?)

GAME 4 - Likes - Dislikes - Piling up a Sentence

Start by telling the students something you like, for example: I like pop music. Then ask a student to recall what you like, and add a 'like' of his or her own: (The teacher) likes poems, I love watching films. Another student adds a further item: (The teacher) likes poems, Tim loves watching films, I am fond of dancing. . . . And so on, with each student adding something, until the chain becomes too long to remember.

Use these expressions: I love , I really like , I really love , He enjoys / He is good at .... , She prefers ........ , We don't mind ...... , They are not afraid of ..... , She is fond of ..... , You are keen on ...... , I am interested in ......

GAME 5 - If I weren't a Taxi-driver

The students note down the answer to the question: 'If you weren't here, where would you be?' Share ideas. Then introduce a slight variation: 'If you weren't here, where would you like to he?' Other similar questions: 'If you weren't yourself, who would you like to be?' Or: 'If you weren't living now, when would you have liked to live?' `If you weren't a student, where would you work?' `If your father weren't a ........ salesman, what would he be?'

GAME 6 - Jobs DEFINITIONS for Martian

Draw a picture of a Martian on the board. Place your two forefingers on either side of your head and tell the class that you're a Martian. Pretend that you are unfamiliar with everyday objects, for example, cars, coffee, ships, music. Pretend also that you don't have a wide vocabulary in English. The students should try to help you understand what each object or idea is, but you must continually ask questions as if you don't understand. For example: (Martian: What does a taxi-driver do? Student A: Taxi-driver drives a car. Martian: What's a car? Student B: People travel in cars. Martian: What's travel in? Student C: Travel means you go from one place to another place. Martian: But what does a car look like? Student D: It's like a box on the wheels. Martian: What's a box?)

GAME 7 - Odd One Out - or What do they have in common? - comparison - both, as...as

Write words on the board from one broad lexical set. Ask the students which word does not 'belong' to the others. Pilot, taxi-driver, stewardess and secretary. Eg. secretary doesn't need a driving license. Challenge the students to argue why this word is the 'odd one out'. Encourage students to argue that another word is the odd one out. One might say that .......... is the odd one out because it is the only one who (you) normally ........... What do they have in common? Pilot, taxi-driver and stewardess travel many kilometers every month. Both pilot and taxi-driver need a special license. Both secretary and stewardess don't need a university degree. Secretary usually isn't as smart as a pilot.

GAME 8 - Selling freezers to Eskimos

Give the picture of an object / a tool to a student. Challenge him or her to 'sell' it to the class by arguing why they really need it. This activity can be done seriously or humorously. For example: (Student: (holding up a picture of a home knitting machine) We are all tired at the end of the day. We can watch television or we can go to the pub with our friends. But if we go to the pub every night it costs a lot of money. Knitting is the answer! Knitting is relaxing. We can give the jerseys, etc. to our friends or we can sell them. So we can relax, express ourselves and make money! Who wants one? The students then decide whether the sales talk was persuasive or not.
Reasons for wanting an object / a tool

All students pick one job card. Student A is a gardener, student B is a butcher etc... Tell the students you have an item to give away as a gift, and the person who can give the most convincing reason why he or she wants it will get it. The item can be something that is really desirable (a new car or a winter coat, for example); or something that is not (a baby crocodile or a stone) so that students really have to use their imaginations to devise reasons why it might be needed. Eg. I really need your stone, I will put it in my new flower bed full of cacti! It will be the most beautiful stone in my new garden! All visitors will be amazed!!!

GAME 9 - DON'T SAY YES / NO

The student X stands in front of the class for 2 minutes. He chooses one job. All students ask quickly questions. The student X mustn't say Yes or No but he has to answer fruthfully! S/he can answer - I do. I don't. Well - not very often. Never! It isn't true. I don't agree with that. etc... If s/he says the forbidden words, s/he is out and another student is chosen.

GAME 10 - DRAW ME A ...

The student X thinks of a tool (knife, hose...), important gadget or profession and draws a simple picture. Others guess what it might be. I think it is.... It can't be a .... Well, it must be a ...... I suppose it is a ...

The idea and SOME examples in the boardgame were used in a boardgame by CUP.

I extended the boardgame, included more expressions for the summary chart + 10 exercises + mirror game. Students throw a dice and walk through the maze and make sentences according to the example chart...
