Candle In The Wind…

„Candle In the wind” is a song in memory of Norma Jeane Mortenson. A lot of people don’t know who Norma Jeane Mortenson or Norma Jeane Baker was. But everyone heard about Marilyn Monroe, I think. Elton John’s song “Candle in the wind” is opening with words Goodbye Norma Jean, and it refers to Monroe's real name.

An actress, singer and model. For some people – dumb blonde, for other - sex goddess. For me, without question - the most famous woman of the 20th Century.

Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1st , 1926 in Los Angeles. Later she was baptized Norma Jeane Baker because of identity of her father. She spent most of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages. In 1942 Norma Jeane had two options: return to the orphanage or get married. She was 16 years old. She decided to marry her neighbor Jimmy. They broken up after 4 years. Several months later a photographer saw her while taking pictures of women contributing to the war effort for Yank magazine. He couldn't believe his luck. She was a "photographer's dream." The camera loved Norma Jeane, and within two years she was a reputable model with many popular magazine covers to her credit. Soon after, Norma Jeane dyed her hair blonde and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe (borrowing her grandmother's last name). She began studying acting. Marilyn's first movie role was a bit part in “The Shocking Miss Pilgrim”. Next roles were in films like “Let's Make It Legal”, “As Young As You Feel”,” Monkey Business” ,“Don't Bother to Knock”… And “Niagara”. Marilyn's success in Niagara was followed with lead roles in the wildly popular “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “How to Marry a Millionaire”. During her career, Marilyn made 30 films and left one.

Unfortunately, Marilyn's fame and sexual image became a theme that haunted their marriage. She divorced second time. Monroe had three marriages, first to James Dougherty, then to Joe DiMaggio, and lastly Arthur Miller. It was also widely rumored that she had had an affair with President John F. Kennedy, his brother Senator Robert Kennedy, or both.

On August, 5th, 1962 the world was stunned. 36-years-old Marilyn Marilyn Monroe was found dead in her bedroom. Her death is one of the most debated conspiracy theories of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It was ruled to be "acute barbiturate poisoning". Some people believe, that she was murdered. She romanced with John F. Kennedy and his brother – a lot of people tell, that Marilyn knew all political secrets, so someone killed her.

Why do I choose her? Because I like her. Marilyn Monroe was more than just a movie star or glamour queen. Today her name is synonymous with beauty, sensuality and effervescence. She remains an inspiration to all who strive to overcome personal obstacles for the goal of achieving greatness. Monroe has often been cited as a pop, sex and cultural icon. For me she is the most famous woman of the 20th Century. I think today there are any actresses or models like Marilyn.

“…And it seems to me you lived your life

Like a candle in the wind

our candle burned out long

before Your legend ever did…”
