17^th MARCH – SAINT PATRICK’S DAY

St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17. Although it was originally an Irish holiday, it is now celebrated in many other countries when Irish communities live. Large-scale celebrations are organised even in such remote places as Japan! The holiday commemorates the death of St. Patrick, a missionary who converted the Irish to Christianity in the 5th century. The legend has it that he banished all the snakes from Ireland, which is now considered just a metaphor for the triumph of Christianity. He is also said to have used a shamrock, a three-leaf plant, to explain the idea of the Holy Trinity to the Irish people. From that time onwards, the green shamrock has been recognised as a symbol of Ireland and worn by everyone on St. Patrick’s Day.

17 MARCA – DZIEŃ ŚWIĘTEGO PATRYKA

Obchodzony co roku 17 marca. Mimo że święto wywodzi się z Irlandii, jest hucznie obchodzone w wielu innych krajach, gdzie żyją mniejszości irlandzkie. Obchody są organizowane nawet w tak odległych zakątkach jak Japonia! Święto upamiętnia śmierć świętego Patryka, misjonarza, który nawrócił Irlandię na wiarę chrześcijańską w V wieku. Legenda mówi, jakoby wypędził wszystkie węże z Irlandii, co jest obecnie używane jako metafora dla triumfu chrześcijaństwa. Mówi się także, że święty Patryk używał koniczyny, trzylistnej rośliny, by wyjaśniać pojęcie Świętej Trójcy. Od tamtego momentu zielona koniczyna stała się symbolem Irlandii i jest dumnie noszona (szczególnie jako broszka) w Dzień Świętego Patryka.
