1. Some important places of South-West: (tourist area, agriculture, sheep, industry centre, food processing there – dairy products, fishing):
ISLE OF WIGHT – it is near to English Channel and it is good holiday destination: beaches are there so tourists want to go there,
ISLE OF SCILLY – it is near to land’s End (only five islands of it are inhabitant); there are small farms – tourism,
CORNWALL – mainly fishing which is main occupation of people; holiday resort; agriculture; it is famous for 600 mines: cooper, zinc, tin and lead; a:
St. Michael’s Mount (now, it is museum which belongs to the National Trust, at first it was monastery, then it was private house),
Land’s End – it is extreme south-western point of mainland Britain: there is St. Ives which is very small holiday resort: lot of artists live there, there is some galleries and exhibitions.
PORTSMOUTH – quite big port of Royal Navy which is very nicely located,
SOUTHAMPTON – main port for ferries, liners, cargo (for transporting of goods); oceanographic centre,
PLYMOUTH – in Devon which is near to Cornwall – the largest port there (really important port during Tudor times); it is also well-known from two historical events:
during reign of Elizabeth I Armada (Scottish fleet of ships and tens of thousands of soldiers) was defeated in 16th century by Francis Drake - the English hero - who went from Plymouth and this victory made England the greatest European sea power,
in 17th century, England wasn’t more Protestant Country and Puritans decided to go away, they sailed to America on Mayflower and they settled down in the place which they called Plymouth,
BRISTOL – quite big port,
BATH – this city was built by Romans; one of the most beautiful town in Europe; there are some different types of mineral water, some spas; all city is built in Gregorian style:
The Royal Crescent (very famous palace),
Roman Bath,
The Pump Room (people go there to drink mineral water or bath in it),
Abbey (cathedrals),
WINCHESTER – Norman Cathedral is there; it was the capital of the kingdom of Alfred the Great,
SALISBURY PLAIN – national park, cathedrals, it is famous for prehistoric Stonehenge (it was built more than 5000 years ago),
DARTMOOR – park which is popular because of moorlands and hills,
EXMOOR – park where are some forests and white ponies,
