Hearing on FBI Background Files
Congress is conducting hearings today on revelations that the Clinton White House obtained morę than 400 FBI security files, including some on former Republican officials. William Clinger, chairman of the House Govemment Reform and Oversight Committee, said he wants to know whether the transfer of the files was a blunder or something morę sinister by Democratic political operatives. Meanwhile, the White House says it will put all personnel security operations under a career civil servant, seeking to quell a scandal over its having obtained confidential FBI files on top Republicans.
Senate Backs Mis sile Defense
The Senate today backed a $300 million speedup in developing an anti-missile defense to protect the United States from a smali missile attack by a rogue nation. The Senate rejected, by a 53-44 vote, an effort to cut the $300 million out of a $267 billion defense authorization bill. A separate bill introduced by Republicans calls for construction of the defense by 2003. President Clinton opposes the speedup, saying U.S. intelligence agencies see no such missile threat for at least a decade. He wants to continue research but not build a missile defense unless a specific threat begins to emerge.
