Tatting consists mainly of a series of rings and chains comprised of double stitches interspersed with picots for decorative or joining purposes.
Various patterns and designs are formed when the rings and chains are joined together.
It should first of all be pointed out that in different places, the fingers of the hand are known by various names, e.g., index finger, ring finger, etc. To avoid confusion, they will be referred to in this book as in this illustration:
THREAD: There is a thread madę especially for tat
ting. It is a size 60, 70, or 80 cotton and is manufactured in a wide variety of colors. It is, however, a little too fine to learn with and a size 10 or 20 crochet-type cotton thread is recommended.
Since it is much easier to learn shuttle tatting with two colors of thread, directions will be given in this book for using a dark and a light color.
SHUTTLE: There are many types of shuttles available
- some with removable bobbins, some with built-in hooks
